Jogging Issues.

I've been power-walking 2 miles 5 days a week for the past 3-4 weeks or so. I have tried throwing in some periods of jogging but I really struggle with it. I almost get a sick feeling if I jog for longer then 30 seconds. My lungs burn, my legs go crooked and it's just not a pleasant experience. I figured my lungs would have improved or something during my power walking. I don't have asthma (I don't believe I do, my twin brother does, though) I'm also not extremely overweight. I've tried various breathing techniques but breathing in deeply through the nose burns (I take Accutane and it dries up everything) I also get a cramp in the SAME spot over and over whenever I try to jog. This sounds like a total whine fest, ugh. Do you guys have any input?

    Ride a bike,
If running does not agree with you, find something that does.

I'm going to say slow down, if your lungs are burning it sounds like you're trying to go too fast (the side cramp suggests the same thing)

Run slowly for 30 sec & then walk again for a few minutes. Over time (and gradually) increase the amount of time you're running and see how it goes.

If the burning etc continues I'd suggest seeing your doctor.

How active were you before trying your speed walking? Do you get a good heartrate when speed walking? I would say it is most likely the extra intake in your lungs as you are not used to breathing that heavy. I jogged for the first time in a long time yesterday and felt exactly what you are saying. But I expected it. I felt better today as I ran a little slower, but longer. I do intervals as otherwise I would drop dead! LOL! Today I made it 1 mile in 15 minutes and I am fine with that for now. It's a good starting point.

    Computer ate my first response!
    1) Go slow. Go as slow as you can while still being able to call it jogging and not walking. Speed comes over time, right now work on building up your endurance a bit.
    2) Try Couch to 5K. It's a program that has you do walking/running intervals over the course of a few weeks to get you to run 30 minutes straight by the end of 9 weeks. I downloaded a podcast and followed that when I did the program last year.
    3) Get fitted for good running shoes at a running store. Walking shoes are not running shoes. This will help alot.
    Good luck!
