Haven't dieted in 25 years - I think I could use some help!

Twenty-five years ago I had some motivation to lose some weight. Not that my job depended upon my losing weight, but it would not have been good if I did not lose 10 pounds fairly quickly. I did, with a little help from a nutritionist and strict adherence to awful diet. Hard boiled eggs, grapefruit, dry toast, dull salads, one broiled lamb chop per week. I stuck to it and lost 12 pounds in two weeks. In those days I was still vigorously exercising three times a week. One year later I was able to retire from the US Army after 21 years of service. The next 22 years were spent in various sedentary jobs, mostly in Europe and the Middle East. Now two years after starting my real retirement from the work force, my doctor tells me it is time to lose the excess pounds that I've gained during the past 20 plus years. He isn't telling me anything I didn't know already. Luckily, my doctor also turned me on to My Fitness Pal and I think it is going work. A pound a week is something I think I can handle, but a year seems like a long time to keep myself motivated.
My handle, or whatever it is you call your user ID, seems to represent an aspect of my aspirations and my life as a glider pilot. I did not learn to fly gliders until I was over 40. The next 12 years living in Europe allowed me to continue my new found hobby. Hawk seems to represent the feeling of freedom and exhilaration I always enjoyed while flying. The "747" represents nothing more than my month and year of birth.
I was unable to continue flying after going to the Middle East except on occasion during short vacations. Now that I have the time, I decided to find out how to get back into gliding again. It did not take long to find out I was 7 pounds over the weight limit to start flying again, even as a passenger. But seven pounds is not enough. I want to get back to my weight when I first started flying gliders.
So that is me in a nutshell. The first half of my life being pretty much in shape and the last 20+ years going down hill. It is time for a turn around. My weight loss ticker is my inspiration.

I empathise with the love of flying gliders as I also used to fly. But I have now found long distance cycling, this is a very similar feeling of freedom, but with the bonus of exercise. It took me a while to get used to the distance thing and you do need to work up to the longer distances. Feel free to add me as a friend and I will try to help with the motivation.0

Feel free to add me if you wish. You seem like an interesting person and I think I've got this diet and exercise thing down pretty well. I'd be happy to help with support and motivation.0
