Why to get a heart rate monitor

So today I used my shiny new heart rate monitor for the first time. I have been exercising vigorously for the past five months and always relying on what the machines were telling me.
I was really curious to see my actual calorie burn, since I've heard gym equipment can over-estimate your calorie burn.
Well, oh, my gosh. Apparently I have been overestimating my burn by 25-30%! No wonder I've been losing weight so slowly.
So... for those of you who don't have a HRM, get one!
And for those of you who have one... How much of a difference is there on your HRM and the gym machines? Because I have heart around 15%, and my difference seems very high.
