Have you used a personal trainer for weight loss?

Hi there,

I am someone who has stopped and started in terms of developing a fitness routine and sticking to it. The best times for me was when I lived on-campus and there was a boot camp where they would literally knock down your door in the morning if you didn't show up! Now that I am older and living off campus I am looking to lose about 35 lbs. I have a treadmill and free weights at home, but I'm not really sticking to it as much as I'd like.

My question is, have any of you used a personal trainer significantly for your weight loss? Would you say it made a huge difference? As a college student I get discounted personal training rates at our campus gym, and I just wanted to know if it was worth it for next semester.

Thanks!

Well, in the end, you are the only person that can get on that treadmill. Consulting with Personal Trainers, Nutritionists and all sort of resourceful people though can really help you define goals and find out interesting and safe ways to get there.

I tried that approach for a few years, was a member at local gym with a really nice program, trainers and nutritionists. But I didn't stick to it either, and felt like crap for wasting time and money, and those people's time too to a point. It "might" be what you need to stick to it, but from personal experience I kinda doubt it. I think those people are in the best position to help you when your mind clicked, when you are truly ready and serious about succeeding and consulting with them for their knowledge and experience, not to use them as motivation.

So yeah, using resourceful people to help you along the way is great, but there will be a day where no one will be there to push you to get on that treadmill, and no one will be there either when you step off of it all sweaty at the end to pat you on the back. That's the part where you do it for you :)

    You can do this!

It always helps if your trainer is a sexy man. I would work hard to impress that! ;)

If you are wealthy enough to get a PT to train you regularly forever then sure!

But if, like me, you probably could only afford to see them a handful of times it might be better to try and find some motivation or enthusiasm for exercise in yourself.

I have also found many PT's give you standard and often incorrect and out of date advice, such as eat 6 small meals a day to boost your metabolism. I have queried many of them about helping me with form/technique for lifting and many do not know about that either.

I use my fiancé as my personal trainer. He's going to get personal training qualifications pretty soon anyway, and he's already really knowledgeable on all things fitness and nutrition related. I find it beneficial because when I work out with him, he pushes me further than I could push myself. Obviously I'm fortunate because I don't have to pay anything, but if you can afford it, I'd recommend a trainer.
