So asking you fitness gurus... Is there an optimum amount of exercise for a person to do?

The past four days I've increased the amount of exercise I do. I feel I'm getting a lot more out of it now. Been doing about an hour of fairly intensive calisthenics and stretching in the late afternoon. Feel like maybe I could do even more than this, but also wary I might burn myself out. Don't think I'm in danger of that at this current level. I'm alternating one day leg work, next day upper body and so forth. I also do Karate 2 nights a week - don't do any other exercises those days besides walking.

Me 41 physically - slowly getting into better shape - still unfit, but, maybe this sounds contradictory seeing as I'm not particularly fit, I seem to have plenty of energy and recovery capacity.

So just wondering if I could say do 30 mins intensive training in the morning, 1 hour in the afternoon and 30 minutes in the evening - Does that sound doable for a regular enough guy in his early 40s, would I benefit from the extra exercise or would there be a danger of heading for burnout?
Thanks for any advice!

In case anyone's interested
I'm doing exercises from a number of online sites. The two best ones I use are http://www.bigkneepain.com/knee-exercises.html and http://www.combatfitness.co.uk/

p.s. yip I spotted my illiterate mistake in title after I posted - can't edit title - doh! :ohwell:

optimum exercise = {challenging activity for current fitness level/(adequate recovery time + scheduled obligations)}/caloric intake
