Is this normal or okay? (jogging)

I think I want to take up jogging now. I did a walk/jog for 30 minutes yesterday wearing new running shoes. Today (last night really...about 12 hours later) my ankles and outer thighs are pretty sore. They feel like normal sore muscles feel after a workout. Is this okay? Is it a sign my shoes aren't right? Can I just run through it?

If it is muscles it is ok. If its joints its not. Give it a few days and run again.

I would say you just used muscles you probably haven't used in a while. Wait a day before trying again. Anytime you start something new and do it for 30 mins you are probably going feel it later. Keep at it because it does get better and you burn tons of calories in a fairly short period.

    This is what I did.

I wasn't ready for jogging, so I started out walking.
Then after a couple of weeks, I started a bit of jogging when I was walking.
After that I felt I was ok to jog and found out about Couch 2 5k. I'm on week 3 now.

Stretch those quads. Mine were a little sore at times.

I'm not sure about the ankles though, perhaps you are landing incorrectly and putting extra pressure.?

When I started running (I'm am doing 1 mile a day, walk a lap then run a lap at the local track) my legs were so sore for the first few days that I could barely walk, I had to suck it up and keep going though and after about a week the pain went away and my legs felt so much stronger!!

Keep it up you will notice how much muscle you can get back in a short amount of time! :)

There's good chance it is OK--cannot say for sure based on post. How much running vs how much walking?

Starting out, esp outdoors (not on a cushioned treadmill), I would recommend 60 sec run intervals and no more than 10 out of 30 min run/walk. Maybe not even that many if you have never run before.

Running is high-intensity and high-impact. It's great exercise and most people can adapt well to it, but no point to beating yourself up and/or risking injury. Beginners should take baby steps.

I am doing same thing myself, transitioning from treadmill to outdoor asphalt. Baby steps.

I'd say I did more walking than running, but I think it was a bit more than 10 minutes of running. Good advice though that I will try and follow next time.

    Thanks, everyone!
