i have only added 1.5tsp of granulated sugar to my diet. I'm over by almost 60g, but that's all whole foods sugar. does this seem reasonable? i'm not sure how to avoid it more than i have.

or i guess a better question might be: is 80g of sugar a big deal when the overwhelming majority comes from whole foods?

my diary is totally open, so you're welcome to look.

  • I looked at your diary, and it appears that not all of your sugar is "whole food" sugar. Pepsi, ice cream, etc are refined sugars and should probably be avoided or drastically reduced (like almost never) for a true healthy lifestyle. My rule of thumb is at the end of the day look at my sugar numbers and then subtract out all of the "whole food" sugars...i.e., fresh fruits, mainly. That gives me a truer picture of my eating for that day in terms of sugar. My bias is that refined sugars should be avoided like the plague.

i meant for today only because i'm making a better effort. yesterday we went on a 4 hour bike ride, so we got ice cream at the end. that's not an excuse, just a fact.

i'm trying to figure out the whole sugar thing and how concerned i should be on a day like today.

also, i stopped logging around mid-april. at the time i didn't give much concern to any kind of diet, i was just recording what i ate when i ate it. so there's a bit of a gap.

~ Here is a lot of info on that matter ... I once was overly concerned, but like the above poster mentioned ... cut back on the refined and less worries about the " natural sugar ".

I usually ignore the sugar bit in there unless it's pop, candy etc. because even if I have a handful of grapes or something I'm over sugar so I wouldn't worry about a couple tsp of sugar or fruits or some dairy etc. to be honest.

thanks, that is helpful. for the majority of my diet, i think i'm all right. it's just that today's number shocked me since i was so serious about measuring any added sugars.

yeah, i'm trying to up my protein a bit because i've maintained the same size for the last year or so and i'm hoping a reduction in refined carbs (breads) and an increase in proteins will help, but then even milk & yogurt have lactose.

i feel really great about today - hell, i even feel good about yesterday. but when i do have something like ice cream or pop, i expect the sugar to be high and don't fret. today it took me by surprise.

I don't even know if that's possible for me to stay under 25g (I don't eat meat regularly). My smoothie alone in the morning (unsweetened almond milk, kale, banana, blueberries, etc.) is 14g.

What I have been reading up on is the sugar to fiber ratio. I've been keeping under 5:1 the last few days. The majority of my food is straight from the ground. I'm not big on barcodes.

If anyone has any info about the sugar to fiber ratio (I'm aiming for 3:1 or under) please chime in!
