burn 276 in an hour

So if I have my heart rate monitor watch going for an hour, but i'm not even doing anything and it says i've burned 276 calories, should I beleive that??? And since I wasn't doing anything for that hour if I were to multiply it by 24 hours, i'd be burning 6,624 calories at the minimum each day??? :noway: I'm not too sure about that. And if that is true, should I put all those burned calories in my exercise log???

    It depends what kind of hrm, if its a good quality one where you had to put in your stats and take a test, then i'd say yeah.

    A few thoughts/questions-

    1- Describe 'nothing'. Vacuuming, chasing/playing with children, putting dishes away etc all take calories for fuel.

    2- Make sure your HRM is placed in the right place. Double check it. Hold your pulse and count beats for fifteen seconds. Then quad it and see what you have vs the HRM.

    By "doing nothing" do you mean you were actually sitting down doing nothing? Had you been exercising just before this? If you had your heart rate would stay elevated for a short period of time. Or maybe your HRM is off :( What type do you have?

    By doing nothing I mean I was at the computer going through e-mails and such...And I have a HI-POWER hrm. And yes, I had to put in my weight, age, etc.

    When I started out with my HRM, I was burning calories a lot more than my friend who was a bunch taller and weighed less... after working out for a few months, i now burn even more calories than before. Average seems to be 200 per hour doing stuff like sitting at your computer, but getting up and walking around you do more, exercising you do more and then it will keep burning more cals after you exercise... but sleeping, you'll burn less.

    So that doesn't seem like it's totally outrageous to me, last time I checked I was burning 300+ per hour. It depends on your size, too.

    Could totally be wrong, but I think that those calories you're talking about (and the 200 or so burned in an hour) are mostly just the calories your body burns to live (to breath, keep your heart beating, blink, digest food, etc.) and then a small amount are from typing at the computer, getting up to get a glass of water, etc.

    I certainly wouldn't count them as exercise calories that you can "eat back."

    Those calories are the ones your body does naturally. They are already accounted for in what you are allowed to eat. That's why I can eat 1200 calories without exercise and still lose weight because my body burns about 1700 calories naturally. Now, I weigh 147 but am muscular so more muscle burns more calories. The more you weigh, the more you burn naturally. That's why guys burn more than women typically. MFP already counts them up so only count what you are doing as additional exercise. I think you can even go into your fitness profile and it says how many you should burn naturally. It would be interesting to compare the numbers after a typical day. :)

    I'm not an expert on HRM's, but I did an experiment last night w/my Polar F6. I "did nothing" (eg I slept") with my HRM on for almost 8 hrs. When I woke up I checked it & it said I burned 10 calories. From what other people have on here have told me HRM's are supposed to account for the calories your body burns just living already so that's not included in the "calories burned". After my test I'd tend to believe that.

    Good point...........the after burn!

    Did you work out prior to sitting down with the HRM on?

    When I tested mine I burned around 90 cals a minute doing normal stuff. But when I went to the beach and walk doing my criss crossing in the sand...........up the beach to the houses, down the beach back to walk in the water.........45 min of up an down with the HR and getting into the 170s while doing so....... I burned 200+ calories over the next hour just SITTING in the chair relaxing by the ocean.

    So you really do burn more calories after you work out.........for hours.

    Your heartrate slows down when you sleep. You would not be burning calories anywhere near that rate for about 8 of those hours. Also hrm can be inaccurate, even with the chest strap, especially at low heart rates, like when you are just sitting.

    Not me... I sweat when I sleep. Cold all day, hot as hell all night... I wake up dripping. It's really kinda icky. lol
