Fastest mile ever

When I started running semi-regularly last July, I was doing 14 minute miles. I wasn't really running so much as walking quickly lol. Then my very fit friend invited me to do a 10K race for Thanksgiving. I bit the bullet and kept training, and I made it in 73 minutes, around an 11:45/mi time. I was so surprised and motivated! However, throughout this I didn't change my eating habits, and I wasn't running with any kind of regular schedule, so I didn't lose any weight.

Well, I still run 2-3 times per week, and started logging in daily to MFP on 3/30/12. I also do JM 30 DS a few days a week and yoga. Since then I've lost almost 8 1/2 lbs, left the "overweight" range of the BMI scale for the healthy range, and my endurance and speed has greatly increased. In fact, last night I ran my fastest mile EVER at 9:16!!! That beat my old PB of 10:18 by more than a minute! I was blown away! I just cannot believe that I can run that fast- I am amazed at myself and the things I can do if I really try.

I just wanted to share this success story to let everyone know that if you put your mind to it, you CAN do it. With hypothyroidism, and a "baby belly", I thought I was going to end up obese like most of my family members. But I made a conscious decision to BE conscious about the way I treat my body, and I am feeling better than I ever have because of it.

Congratulations, that's wonderful and running can easily morph into a lifetime habit.

If you really want to work on speed, make one of your runs each week speed intervals (like doing one lap on a track at a pace faster than 9:16, then walking to recover, run another lap at that pace etc) or on hills.

Congrats. Running for me is great like that where little or huge improvements in times make me feel great and really like running. Well done again.

I've heard about interval training! I'm definitely going to try it! Thanks :)
