Organic Diets

I've heard people talk about eating organic foods only, and it's made me curious. Can eating organically really significantly improve your health? I know there are a lot of chemicals in processed foods, but I don't really know just how many additives are harmful.

Also, i was wondering if it's safe to eat organically, because organic food sometimes looks very different than our regular idea of food (fruit in particular). Maybe it's the distorted image being shoved into our minds, but the lumps and bumps on organic food sometimes freak me out a bit.

Is anyone here on an organic diet, and if so, what are some of your favorite dishes? I'm just curious as to how organic dieting works, and why it's done.

Anything artificial has no place in your body. The ingredient list in most of the processed foods today reads like a chemical chart.

I worked for a chemical company for 4 years. It was very eye opening to find out some of the things that go into the food we eat. My wife and I have been eating organic ever since.

    Is organic food safe? Absolutely!

I do organic for everything except restaurants. You should totally try it and see for yourself! Find a Whole Foods and you'll have no problems enjoying all your favorites without the chemical chart where the ingredient list should be :flowerforyou:

personally, organic does nothing for me but i know people who swear by it. i would test it out for yourself to see if it makes a difference. I would be weary of the word "organic" because it can have a broad definition. If you're going to pay the extra for an organic product, make sure its from a reputable place. if you have a whole foods market near you, that would be a great place to start.
  • Eating organic has been the best thing I have ever done for myself. I feel better, my acne is gone, my cycles have become regular, no more dandruff, losing weight without being hungry, more energy...I would absolutely recommend organic foods to anyone and everyone. Yes, it is expensive, but you are worth it. And you don't have to start 100%. There are lists of foods on the internet that contain the most hormones, antibiotics, and pesticides, and you can start by swapping out those foods to begin with. (Meats, dairy, coffee, and certain fruits and veggies) As was stated by someone earlier, the more of these endocrine disruptors you eliminate from your diet, the better. It was Jillian Michaels' book Mastering your Metabolism that really opened my eyes to what processed and non-organic foods do to our bodies, making me never want to eat that junk again.

    Good luck! :flowerforyou:

My husband and I have been eating organic almost exclusively for several years now. Michael Pollan is an author of many great books about food. It's a good idea to read up on the topic. After much research on the subject of food, I have come to the conclusion that eating local and organic food is the best thing I can do for my body and the earth.:flowerforyou:
  • If you can grow your own veggies that would save you a lot of money and be much better for the environment. And you can definitely taste the different even compared to organic from the store. Growing vegetables is especially easyyy! You'll be surprised at how fast they grow.
I rather buy from local farmers than organic vegetables and fruits as organic veggies/fruits are often shipped all the way from South America, Mexico, and other countries (esp. if it's off season)!
Definitely not better for the environment. :noway:
If you can't afford all organics (it can be so expensive esp. for a whole family and some produce doesn't come with an organic version), I would go organic for the foods that you eat the most of (staple foods) and the ones with the most pesticide residue and all meat/dairy products (as pesticides are stored in fat and well there's also the issue of those antibiotics and animal mistreatment!). You can buy produce washes that get rid of pesticides and waxes too.
