It depends on the day for me! I have only been running for about 7 months. I try to do at least one "long" run a week (about an hour). Otherwise, I try to always do at least 5K, so about 30 minutes. I did the Couch to 5K plan to get started. The gradual build-up of time worked well for me.

I'm by no means on my way to a marathon. I can't do timed running, I go for distance. I started out just jogging a mile, and could do that in about 12 minutes. I did that for a few weeks and then kinda fell out of it. I'm going to start the Couch to 5K though and am actually looking forward to it :-)

I'm pretty in shape and training for a ten k, so my mileage right now is about 35 miles a week. I do several 5 mile runs, a tempo or speed work adding up to about 7 miles, and a long run 13-14 miles.
I love to run! But no matter how much you do, keep it up. It only gets better!

c25k is a great program. I am a slow runner! 14 minute miles but I love it! I entered a 5k in April with intentions of walking 1st and 3rd mile and ended up running the entire thing. (my profile picture finishing with my dad) I then entered a 10K two weeks later with intentions of running the even number miles and ended up running the entire thing too! I have turned into Forrest Gump! My son has baseball games on Tuesday and Thursdays. The field is two miles from my house. Yep. I run there and back!

I am a beginner so right now it's usually around 30 mins. I can only do about 2.5 or so miles in that amount of time, though.

a 7 min mile or a 14 min mile is still a mile. Dont worry about the time, do the distance. You only have to work past the voices in your head that say "Stop, your dying" or "Stop you cant breath". I do anywhere from 3 to 12 miles a day about 5 days a week, sometimes 6 days. I just started sprints up hill today and am hoping to build my endurance and leg muscles for longer faster runs. But at this point I am happy that I can run at all. I always start out walking for awhile to get warmed up and I have been enjoying the days. Soon you will be running and your mind will wander about your day and your life and you will find that the time means nothing really, it is the strength you are building and the way you feel when you are done. The paths you take will change with the season and you will be so so so much stronger and happier. Running is almost a form of meditation for me. I NEVER thought I would hear those words come out of my mouth.

I got an issue of Running magazine, thinking it would be all about "super runners" and "marathons". But it had the most practical information and advice that I subscribed and got a free book called "the runners body" and that book blew me away, it made me understand more how our bodies are made to run and take long strides and how much more healthy we become when we run AND EAT RIGHT (as in feed your body, no starving)

Dont worry about how fast you run, go through the motions and the body mechanics and go slow to start and day by day you will run longer and better and you will smile! and know you did it! it is an amazing trip!

Depends on the day. I ran 20 miles on Sunday - took me 3 hours and 1 minute. I'm in training for a marathon, though. I don't just randomly go run 20 miles because it's so darn much fun. LOL!
  • i am not a good runner at all but have worked myself up to doing 3.2 miles in about 30 minutes. I usually stop 1x for less than 1 minute. I have learned that I have to just run at a slower pace in order to run longer.

Ok. I am going to run 30 minutes tomorrow. I think Im using the end of the block as a reason to stop.

I wouldn't force yourself to jump from 15 mins to 30 mins in one day. Run until you feel like you can't, then continue on walking until you catch your breath, but not much longer than it takes to get your HR down and catch your breath. Then start running again. Do that for the 30 mins. If you do this a couple times a week, you will be able to run farther and walk for shorter breaks each time, and you will work your way up to 30 min runs without torturing yourself. A mistake *most* new runners make is pushing themselves to the point of torture and then quitting, because you feel like running IS torture. It really isn't and if you build up your miles appropriately you will love it.

To answer your original question, I do 30 mins of sprint intervals at the gym on lifting days, and 30-75 mins of steady state runs on cardio days.

30 min... on an ellipitical.. not sure if that even really counts :frown:? I am thinking of starting the couch to 5k program to progressively start running outside.

Half an hour on the treadmill equals about a 27:40 5k with a couple minutes to chill. If I'm not motivated that day then 1 mile or mile and half then switch to elliptical. And if it's a SUPER painful dayninswitch up the cardio machines stairs, elliptical . Bike , treadmill on incline just so that get 30 minutes of cardio every time I go.

I used to hate running. I couldn't run longer than 15 minutes without feeling like I was going to pass out. It took doing 10K's to get me going. My first one I walked mostly. The next few I ran/walked, and now I just run. They are so much fun, and motivating. No one judges how fast or slow you are...it's seriously great. I never thought I'd be a runner but I'm proud to say it's probably one of my favorite exercises.

Hang in there...it gets better I promise. I used the elliptical set at a high resistance at first to help work my legs out and make them stronger. I run at a 6.5-7.5 mph pace for an hour or so.

It definitely counts as building cardio! But because the elliptical removes the impact almost entirely, it will feel very different when you transition to running, and you may not be able to last as long. But the base of cardio that you've built will be invaluable when you make the switch!

As someone mentioned before, a common mistake is to push too hard and burn out. Make sure you stay slow and steady, then build on that. I run for one to three hours but I go REALLY slow. This prevents injury for me. Maybe when I lose a little more weight I can work on my speed.

I do anywhere from 5k to about 18k right now. 30 minutes to 2 hours. I'm running a half marathon in August and I'm hoping to come close to 2 hours... but 2:06 would be awesome.

When I just run, it's about everyday 41-45 min 5K about 5x a week. I'm hoping to get longer runs in, but it's hard because of the heat. I eventually want to start running 10k at least every other run during the week or 2x a week even. I just started running mid-late March with April not running for 2 wks straight because of almost killing myself by accidentally stepping on a snake and I didn't want to run. 2 wks beg of May as well since I had to send my shoes back to the manufacturer. I didn't do C25K just ran, it's about distance for me. Hoping to get my time better!!

I too can only run 15min maximum...but i think the best way is to start one day 10min...then every two or 3 days go up by a couple minutes...by the end of 2 weeks you'll be closer to running a good 30min :) it seems slow and not very effective but little steps in the long run can get u a long way :) and i'd rather run 15min and burn calories instead of sitting 15min on my *kitten* not doing anything!
