VO2 Max - does this sound right?

Hi all

I've just done the resting HR test on this website: http://www.shapesense.com/fitness-exercise/calculators/vo2max-calculator.aspx
I only did that one because I'm at work at the moment... but I counted 21 in 20 seconds, and it's telling me that my VO2 Max is 45, which is labelled as 'excellent'. I'm finding this quite difficult to believe, since I've only been going to the gym for 10 months, and putting serious effort into my workouts since about November! I did the test twice and the second time I got 47!

If it helps I'm 32, 5 ft 7 and about 150 lbs. I just can't believe I'd be that fit?? What sort of results have you all had, and what's your perceived fitness levels?

got a 41 rated as excellent and it really wasnt my resting heat rate becasue i just chased the kids out of the house and had a big cup of coffee. I think i am fit, a bit overweight, but i am fit. I dont think i am excellent though

Well this is the thing, I'm not an endurance athlete! I was proud the other day of being able to run for 8 minutes straight! I've got asthma which doesn't help, but still - I don't think of myself as particularly fit.

Does blood pressure come into it? I do have low blood pressure....

I used that and tested at 60. While I am an endurance athlete I know my VO2 Max is not that high. Last time I tested I was around a 48

To Test your VO2 Max for running

    1. Using a treadmill on 1% incline or at a track that is flat run for 15 minutes at an easy warmup pace.
    2. Once you are completely warmed up run all out for 12 minutes. The goal is to run for the entire 12 minutes so sprinting is not likely to give you the most accurate score if you cannot hold the pace for the full 12 minutes. However, walking is allowed if necessary.
    3. Note the total distance you ran in Meters during the 12 minute span.
    a. Subtract 504.9
    b. Divide the result by 44.73

The result will approximate your VO2 Max. This is still only an approximation of your current fitness and the only way to get a true VO2 Max is to find a local a testing center.

You can use this website to get more info and figure out what is normal for you age/sex.

Thanks for replying - looks like I'll have to do a proper fitness test at home to try and establish it. Meanwhile I'll keep my HRM at 35.

    Cheers people

A large part of VO2max is genetic so it is easily possible for yours to be 45 with the work you have done.

I had mine tested once about 20 years ago and it was 73 doing just Army physical fitness every morning.

    Ruddy hell! That's pretty high!

I'll try out one of those fitness tests at the weekend when I've got time and see what it gives.

    Thanks all for replying
