Hello All!
My name is Evie, and I am a diabetic...
I have struggled with my weight and poor eating habits all my life. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my daughter 6 years ago. Since then I have ridden the roller coaster of being fanatical, and not giving a hoot. I have been thru the anger, the sadness, and the denial, and most times I continue to live my life as if I didn't have diabetes. The epiphany for me came one day as I watched my child eating dinner, she complained that her stomach hurt even as she continued to shovel it in "because, Mommy, it tastes sooo good..." I realized at that point, that her eating habits were a direct reflection of mine, and it scared me to death. I know what being the "fat kid" feels like, and I don't ever want her to feel that pain and helplessness. So, I have a dr appt today to confess my sins, so to speak, and ask for help getting this diabetes under control, and I am looking to this site for some support in meal planning and encouragement for those days when "not giving a hoot" is the easier answer. Have a great day!

I'm starting today too. I've been signed up on MFP for several months but have yet to utilize it or tackle my problems. My mom is starting today with me as well. She has diabetes and it's all because of her weight issues. I have the same body make up as my mom and I don't want to have to take medication to control something I should be controlling with my lifestyle. I've been overweight my whole life, same with my mom. My latest wake up call came when my 10 yr old son thought it would be funny to rest his arm on my belly while we were waiting in line at the store. He didn't mean any harm but this just isn't right!!! Let's get serious for our kids and our health!!! Good luck to you and I hope for the best on your doctor visit today!!!0

it was my kids that got me started too, in jan. i have 3 little boys, and i want to see them grow up. i was diagnosed with diabetes several years ago, and even with diet and exercise and pills I'm insulin resistant, and that scares me. so far i've lost 67 lbs and have 65 to go to reach my goal weight.
my first eye opener on here was logging what i eat, and seeing how much junk i would eat without realizing it. eating in front of the computer, in front of the tv, just shoveling it in without realizing what you're eating. i called what i had "anorexxxia" because when i looked in the mirror, i saw a thin person. now all i see is the fat, so i've still got a long way to go on the body image stuff, but its definitely a process.
the thing about MFP that worked for me when everything else seemed to fail after a while, is I learned from others who BTDT and worked thru it. i lost about 30 pounds on weight watchers point system and then plateaued for 6 mos. didn't know what to do to break it, figured i was stuck, gave up. gained 10 pounds back before i started mfp. well i just broke my first plateau (didn't hit until after 3 mos) and the weight is dropping fairly quickly again, so i know i can do this! i have resources i've never had before.0 -
thank you both for the encouragement and welcome. I too have been the Weight Watcher route (points and CORE), and Nutrisystem, but nothing stuck. The most important thing I learned thru those, is I have learned to like vegetables, so I hope that will help me here. Good luck on your journeys!0
