How to come back

I have been running for the past 8 weeks, 4-6 days a week. I have been getting some okay mileage, usually averaging around 24 miles a week. I did something stupid though --- too much too fast and I ran through A LOT of pain. In in the course I managed to developed three grade 4 (the worst there is) stress fractures in my right tibia. Long story short, obviously this sucks. I have to take a minimum of 6 weeks off running at all. It's been 2 days and I already miss it.
So my questions are this. Has anyone had stress fractures in their shin before? What exercise did you do while recovering and how long did it take you to recover? How did you get back into running? I am trying to continue to lose weight and was beginning to train for a half marathon and the set backs seem daunting.
