Hi there. I stopped smoking three months ago, but have, in the process, gained twenty pounds. I figure, since I quit smoking, it must be time for an entirely new approach to living which means... eating healthy and exercising regularly. I figured I'd give this a shot to help stay motivated and move myself onto a new path.

The smoking has been difficult, though it's easier now than it was a in April. I've been trying to quit for a few years, but always went back to it. What finally did it for me is when I went to the doctor for a physical exam and they ran an ultrasound over my carotid arteries. I had no blocks or anything like that, but the arteries themselves were already showing signs of hardening: I'm thirty-four and they said my arteries looked forty. Maybe that isn't overly frightening, but it was enough to give me a wake-up call. So, I walked out of the doctor's office that day and simply made up my mind that it was time to change while I was still at least somewhat ahead (aside from the arteries, I had no other signs of damage from smoking).

I went to a life coach for the first few weeks, which I think really helped me because it kept me accountable. It was easier to overcome the urge to smoke when I knew I was going to check in with my coach in just a few days. He also helped me understand my triggers and the reasons behind smoking addiction that I really hadn't understood prior to that. Understanding my own addiction to the chemical, understanding my body's need for the chemical, made it easier to get away from it, if that makes any sense at all.
