There is no need to eat over 1000 calories

Lately I've noticed at lot of people on the boards touting their 'no need to net over 1000 calories a day method'. And if you are not on board with their method they will become negative, surly and downright nasty. In a certain circumstance they were encouraging person to continue eating well under 1000 calories while that person was already having physical repercussions. While we encouraged her to reevaluate her calorie intake and eat more - we were slammed by this group of people stating that there is no scientific proof that you need more calories than that a day. Thank goodness that In this circumstance the OP decided to up her calorie intake because she was feeling weak and losing her hair.
When you sign on the MFP and fill in your information MFP calculates what your calorie intake should be. I highly doubt they have ever recommended netting under 1000 calories a day. If you are eating well under your calorie guidelines and encouraging other people to do so....maybe this site isn't a good fit for you?!?! Just sayin.....
No Promotion of Unsafe Weight-Loss Techniques or Eating Disorders
a) Posts intended to promote potentially unsafe or controversial weight loss products or procedures, including non-medically prescribed supplements or MLM products will be removed without warning.
b) No pro-anorexia or pro-bulimia posts, groups, profile names, or profile bylines. Photos intended to promote or glamorize extreme thinness are also not permitted.

Under 1000 calories? That is just asinine.0

Just the other day on the news, a 15 year old girl wrote in a letter to the "Ask The Doctor" segment. She was very short and weighed only 87 lbs, and even HE recommended NO LESS THAN 1200 NO MATTER HOW SMALL YOU ARE!!!0

Those people scare the Jesus out of me.0

Personally I never go over 1000 cal (in one meal...... )
Sadly people have so much emotionally invested in body image and there's a great deal of misinformation out there (much of it spread by companies wanting to profit from our misery). I don't hesitate to report threads or posts that violate the TOS in this manner.0 -
You should not eat that low unless under the supervision of a doctor. However, I know several obese/morbidly obese individuals who have been put on <1000 calorie diets by their doctors, and seen good results. To say that it is never appropriate is ignorant, and to bash people who are following their doctor's advice is even worse.
I have definitely posted on some of these topics, as the "starvation mode <1200 calories" myth here seems to have grown out of proportion. I have also seen people eating <1000 calories at their doctor's recommendation be told that that is wrong, and they should eat 1200+, and get a new doctor, which is every bit as bad.
Can we try to base our arguments on science and what is effective rather than broscience and dogma?0 -
I don't worry about them at all. I always see them a year later having gained it all (and then some) back.0

Get a second opinion....
A daily diet consisting of 1000 calories or less should never be attempted unless the dieter is under the supervision of a qualified doctor or nutritionist as it can prove harmful to the body and at times, even fatal.
The diet is so restricted in energy values that it is too challenging for the normal individual to ensure that all of their vitamin and mineral requirements are being met. While multi vitamins can supply some needs, even these cannot meet all of the body's needs.0 -
is it bad that i find it hard to eat over 1000 calories? i usually eat between 900-1100 calories. i eat healthy foods that are low in calorie for more food. i will be full at the end of my day, and be under 1000....i dont deprive myself, so i sometimes dont see why i have to eat 1200+...someone help?0

Grossing under 1000 calories is different than netting under 1000. For instance, most of my net totals are under 1000 because I work off much of what I eat in the morning and afternoon at the gym. This doesn't mean that it's recommended for everyone, or that it's the right or wrong way to do things. If I had physical repercussions, I would definitely eat more, but for the most part I'm most concerned about getting enough nutrients more than the mere caloric intake. So long as I'm getting close to my mark for protein, carbohydrates, and fatty acids, as well as vitamin intake, the calories are just a sort of scorecard than an actual requirement. I do always try to get over 1200 gross, though, so that MFP doesn't nag me about not eating enough.0

If anyone has ever seen My 600 lb Life, most of those folks end up undergoing bariatric surgery, and with that, they generally can't eat more than 1000 per day, but as another poster said, that's for people who are morbidly obese, and under a doctors supervision. I can't see how eating so few calories can be good for you, especially if you have a fairly active life. I would worry too much about the consequences to not getting enough nutrition.0

It scares me too, I see so many girls on here who have obvious eating disorders and I've said before that I think this site is detrimental to their recovery. And to PROMOTE eating disorders? Are they trying to hurt others along with themselves?
1200 is low enough fgs! Anyone should be able to lose weight on that amount (excepting those recommended to eat fewer by a DOCTOR).0 -
I eat under 1000 calories pretty often and feel just fine. I dont push my eating habits on anyone else, so why the **** does it bother you?1

BECAUSE YOU ARE IN STARVATION MODE AND WILL PLATEAU. AND DIE. IT'S FAR BETTER TO EAT THAT MAGICAL ~*1200 KCAL*~, EVEN IF IT'S NOT ALL CLEAN, AS OPPOSED TO 999 KCAL OF GOOD, HEALTHY FOOD. HOW VERY DARE YOU.
I often net under 1000 due to exercise and this post just rubs me all the wrong way. Why so judgemental over what others net? 1200 is such an arbitrary number.0 -
I eat 1500 cals, net is 6-800. My doctor says this is fine at 245lbs still and that I only have to eat more as I get near to goal. I'm really full and healthy. If I had any negative effects I'd eat more... 4 dietitians have taught me this way, NHS dietitians, so 1200 net isn't always right x0
-
I try to eat at least 1200 I set my calories to 1,532 calories that was calculated for my height, goal weight and my body fat percentage. sometimes my calories are 1300-1400 calories. other days 1100-1300 calories. I do try to eat the proper amount of calories. I do go under some but it's good sometimes the calories to certain foods are not an accurate account of it.0

BUT HOW DO U EXERCISE???? IF U DO NOT EAT 1200 KCAL YOU HAVE NO ENERGY 2 EXERCISE!!!!!0 -
this is a really serious topic, im glad someone is writing something sensible about it. i have been in the shoes of not eating anything for a very long time, and while i have seen some thinking this site is not good for recovery it seems to have helped me. im at my highest weight ever and thats stilly very tiny, but i have come to realise that after 14 years of =struggling i ddont have too. people should promote that you can eat stacks of healthy foods like veg and fruits lean meats nuts and pulses in fairly large quantities, and as long as you arent being greedy then you know what you wont get fat, but getting the right nutrition is essential to your health. was always skinny but eating crap when i did eat, more people should express the importance of health i like that people care enough about their 'friends' on here to actually say something as the OP did i dont think we need to put a number on it because it makes people argue too much but, at the end of the day deep down we all know what we should be doing its if we choose not to. but noone should push anyone to do something extreme like the OP pointed out0

If you are not pushing your eating habits on anyone.....or asking for advice, then no it doesn't bother me. It's your business and none of mine!
But when someone gets on the boards asking for advice people will voice their opinion as they should everyone is entitled to their opinion. But when they get nasty, degrading and rude while trying to shove their opinion down your throat...then it bothers me!0 -
I don't hunk the original poster was bashing anybody. She clearly stated the person she was talking about felt weak and was losing her hair. This is not healthy and she clearly needed to eat more calories. The other people on that board were encouraging her to stay at the calorie level she was at. When you feel weak and you lose your hair you need to increase your calories. We all need to listen to our own bodies. If you can net under 1000 calories a day and feel fine, keeping your hair, the good for you. If you can't then eat more. I don't think anybody here was bashing anybody.0

^^ agree with this. It's when people push their unhealthy attitudes to food onto others that I get pissed off.0 -

I agree! From what I understand that's (1200) a base number of what your body would need to function (grow hair/nails/etc) if you were in a coma, so why people would dip below that I don't know. It's not healthy0 -
wait for it...wait for it....

If I tried to go any length of time eating only 1000 calories/day I'd likely eat my own children.0

There are outliers to every rule - Most people should not eat that little. You look like you are very tiny ( I mean that as in skeletal structure, not as an insult), you also look like you could be very short ( I could be wrong - just going by a profile pic here). It could be possible that you are one of the outliers that are ok with 1000 calories a day. I also haven't seen posts from you telling people that that is what they should be doing, which is different.0 -
I've had a few days where I ate <1,000 calories, but not on purpose, and that was before dieting. Nowadays, I'll always shoving food in my mouth...just healthy food.
1,000? To each his/her own. They have to make their decisions for themselves. It's not my responsibility.0 -

lmfao thats what i was thinking!!!0 -
That is just CRAZY...I could not imagine eating that little...i would be not only HUNGRY but moody....
