I tried a different "routine" today on the treadmill. I would walk very fast paced for 5 min and run for 2, walk for 5, run for 2.....is there any real benefit to that, or was I just doing that to feel "cool" lol? TIA MFP! :)

  • I would like to know the answer to this as well. I have started doing a walk/run in the morning....I walk a block and then run a block. I want to say that there is benefit to this. I am addicted to The Biggest Loser and have seen the trainers tell the contestants to do this where they run for a few minutes and then walk for a few minutes and so on. But, I do have to say I do feel "cool" doing it. lol

Sure. If your goal is to learn to run. Also, adding in running you'll burn more calories in the same amount of time... if you have 30 minutes for cardio, you'll burn more doing walking and running vs. just walking.

This is why she's my friend because she's so smart. And she's right, interval training should (everyone is different) help make you a better runner and gives you a better workout than just walking.

Ha Ha.. I just posted a similar topic:

Yes, there is benefit. It's interval training. It stresses your heart, lungs and muscles. This in turn forces them to recover differently. When you just jog at a moderate pace for 20 minutes your body becomes used to that. You start to lose the benefits of it. You body is complacent. Interval training makes your body work harder and gives you better results.

I'm sure there's a more scientific response to the benefits of interval training, its the same idea behind, P90X, Insanity, and BootCamp.
