Go to MY HOME - Goals

Top right hand side it says " Calories burned from normal activities"

    This does not include exercise.

okay, I see it..I put in my profile moderate activity because I workout minimum 4 days a week..burning a decent amount of calories.. It gave me a TDEE of 1740 a day.. I subtracted 15% from that and it gavme me 1479..why does mfp tell me to eat 1200? So I SHOULD be eating the 1479 everyday then correct???

because you told MFP you wanted to lose weight at a greater rate than the 15% deficit ?

If you set it to more than 1 lb/week you would be given 1200 as a goal as the real answer is below 1200.

TDEE is your total Expenditure for a day. That is your BMR + Calories Burned through Exercise. Your TDEE cannot be estimated until after your workouts. I HIGHLY suggest that when you do exercise, use a HRM. The estimates on MFP are grossly off due to generalization/estimation.

Start with your BMR and set your loss goal. Go from there.

Thanks..I do wear a HRM..best piece of exercise equipment I've bought so far. I burn between 400-600 per workout..I don't stop until I've burned at least 400(anal but thats how I am. LOL).

My calorie burn for the week is between 1600-2000 I run 3 days a week, walk 2, and rest 2 for the most part

I work in a school as an aide and am on my feet all day long. I do quite a bit of walking at work..my average is 4,000-6000 steps a day which is equal to 2-3 miles.. somedays my steps are more.

I have my activity level set at light for work

There are 2 practices that are well supported
1 - Weekly TDEE as you have here.
    2 - Daily.

I prefer the daily as life can throw you some curve balls and you just might not get that workout in.

I'm trying to figure out how many calories I should be eating per day to lose weight. I do beleive I have NOT been eating enough..in fact, I know it. I had my cals set at 1200 per mfp and most days didn't eat back exercise cals.. when I did workout I would net way below my bmr..I now know that is bad..

I'm looking for a number to set it too and leave it..LOL

sounds like your average TDEE might be around 2000, so go with 1600 - 1700 calories a day every day for 3-4 weeks and see how it works. Less than 1 pound per week so 3 or 4 weeks to be sure you can see the effect,

Thank you, Thank you! Thats kind of what I was thinking too.. I've been so used to eating 1200 cals that it is scary to move up. But, I also know I've done damage to my body by not eating enough to sustain my workouts. Would you agree that working out 4 days a week burning between 400-600 cals per time is moderate activity?

    again, thanks

moderate activity puts your TDEE at 1.55 times your BMR, compared to 1.2 times for sedentary.

So the extra 0.35 on a daily basis is perhaps 490 per day. *7/4 = 857 so close but slightly under moderate I would say.

Light active is 1.375 BMR, 0.175 more than sedentary. say 245 per day average, *7/4 = 429 per day on exercise days - better fit I think.
