What muscles are toned by running?

I've heard that running is one of the number one exercises for toning the whole body. Has this been true for you? I recently started running 3-4 times per week. Should I be adding strength training to my workouts for extra toning? I'm 5'2" and 206 lb.

Yep add strength training, it's a great fat burner along with running.0

Your question has no answer because "toned" doesn't actually mean anything. There is fat gain/loss and muscle gain/loss.0

how does running "tone" your upper body? swimming on the other hand...0

Definitely add strength training to your routine. Running definitely works your legs and core, but I'm not sure about the arms so much. Either way the benefits of running are much different than the benefits of lifting weights!0

strength training/ resistance will help you get toned. You can run and burn lots of cals and lose weight but toning is when you start seeing definition (A little noticeable muscle)0

Thanks for the advice, all. I recently bought resistance bands. I was thinking I'd start with them and gradually go to weights.0

Definitely add resistance training! Running burns lots of calories but is doesn't tone your body (maybe just your calves). It's great cardiovascular exercise but if you want to see definition, pick up those weights. You'll love they way they shape and sculpt you!0
