When is a good time to use protein shakes?

Hi all, I've recently started lifting on the advice of this forum and its going pretty well so far. Only thing is I'm not sure when it is appropriate to start using protein shakes. I'm only about 1/3 of the way to my goal weight and I'm not sure if using them will stop my weightloss or not. Obviously I would ensure that they fitted into my calorie limits for the day.

So are protein shakes whilst still overweight a good idea or not?

    When you can't get enough protein from other natural sources. When you eat your protein really doesn't matter, so don't put stress upon yourself, and weight loss is about your calorie allottment, not a particular meal or supplement.

    I have one 1st thing in the morning, before I work out. They say to have one after your work out too but I don't as I eat dinner shortly after my work out.
