Cycling: Honey vs. Energy Gel?

I need your feedback cycling fans! I am looking for an inexpensive way to replenish my carbohydrates/energy while road cycling. At around $1.00 per pouch it is way too expensive to purchase gels (GU, Stinger, Hammerhead & etc.)! I am thinking of consuming pure honey diluted with water on my rides. Does anyone here consume pure honey while riding? What are the pros and cons?
Weather permitting I ride 4 to 5 days per week at around 26 miles per ride. 30 to 40 miles on the weekend rides with my cycling club.

I haven't done it but I have a recipe to make your own energy gel using honey, honey lacks potassium and sodium. It adds some molasses for the potassium, and salt for sodium. It's 7tsp honey, 1 tsp molasses, and 1/8 tsp salt. Which makes several servings. Although it sounds yummy, I haven't figured a way to transport it that wouldn't leave me sticky.0
