Beef Jerky stick expiration...

So... I work at a hotel, and when a guest checks out the housekeepers typically go in and remove all perishable items that are to be thrown away... sometimes they bring it back for everyone to look through before having to waste anything. Today I came across a TON of Jack Links Matador beef jerky sticks... and, of course, everyone knows my undying love and possible addiction/obsession with beef jerky sticks, so I was the first to grab them. I know this is pathetic, but I was SUPER excited! lol I recently spent about $26 on beef jerky sticks, and what I found was probably a good $40 worth... jackpot for me!

Then my excitement was abruptly retarded when I saw: Best by: 10 2010. BLAH!! It supposedly expired 2 years ago...

So... my question is, do these things REALLY expire?? I'm so excited about them, I ALMOST want someone to just tell me they don't expire just so I can gobble them up. Considering the amount of preservatives they have in them, I'm surprised they expire at all though... so I want to use that as my excuse, BUT not sure if there might be consequences.

Maybe someone might know more about beef stick expiration dates more than I?

Anyone??

Thanks in advance!

PS: I know beef sticks aren't healthy, but I don't care. They are my special treat, and my love! Don't judge me!! ;P

Are you kidding, expire? Beef sticks will be around long after the world has ended...with the amount of curing and preservatives, they will last through nuclear wars and armaggedon! I wouldn't hesitate to eat them, course I don't have the same passion for them as you do!

lol yes... I am rather passionate about my beef. Edible or otherwise. haha
I'm going to take a nibble of one of the expired sticks tonight and see what happens. I like to think that I have a pretty solid stomach, but there are some things I just can't do. I guess we'll see!

I'm in agreement on the beef sticks, though I personally be a bit paranoid about eating food that was left behind like that though. I was a kid in the 80's when people were supposedly getting razor blades in Halloween candy... I guess it's stuck with me!

At any rate, I've always wondered if someone eats the food that I leave in hotel fridges... particularly when I leave good stuff or beer!! I'm glad to hear that it probably gets put to good use :-)

    Enjoy your beef sticks!
  • I hope they taste fine- I love them too! I don't think they'll expire in only 2 years. I had a snack sized one for the first time in forever yesterday evening... it was like heaven.

I've never heard of anyone dying from eating an expired beef jerky. Eat one tonight, and if you wake up tomorrow, then eat the rest!! Enjoy!!

With as much sodium as those have in them, not a chance they spoiled. I eat expired food all the time. It is called the "best by" date because it doesn't just go bad it just loses some of the flavor.

Beef jerky is preserved so well, I don't really understand why they have expiration dates. The plastic they come in will deteriorate before the jerky does. Well, slight exaggeration, perhaps, but not much.

Try Tanka bars.............you will never eat beef jerky again.

Or invest in a dehydrator and make your own. Heaven and way cheaper and better for you too.
