So first of all Hello MFP people,
I'm a 28 year old guy who has been a healthy weight for most of my life, but with a new job doing 12 hour shifts I've start to put on weight and now own a ever growing belly. So I'm starting to increase the exercise that I'm already doing but for the first time in my life I'm now looking at what I eat. Normally I just eat what I wanted as I was slim, but the other night I started reading back of food packets and was shocked when I noticed a scotch egg had more calories that a bloody cadburys cream eggs.
So yeah I'm a little shocked at the crap I've been eating and will be reading lots of success stories on the forums to keep myself motivated .

Welcome to MFP! You'll love the site and (most of) the people. We still get our share of internet trolls. :-)
Aren't labels quite a surprise? I'm amazed at the counts on some of the stuff I used to eat. Good luck to you!0 -
Good luck! I work two jobs with long hours, so I know how you feel! I have a lot of trouble trying to get in healthier foods when I'm out and about. This site is awesome for throwing what you eat in your face! Good Luck!0

No kidding! All kinds of things I thought were healthy...packed with calories!!! You can learn alot by logging everything you eat. Good luck with your belly.0

Well it doesn't help that I do a desk job, and all the lads around be bring in packets of biscuits every day for us all to eat, but they are happy today as I've taken all the crap out of my kitchen and gave it to the lads, leaving me with healthy food at the moment. I do keep eyeing up that rolo cookie, but I will be strong0

Hello and welcome. :-D
I'm guessing that you're in the UK (the reference to a Scotch Egg tipped me off). The calorie content of random foodstuffs is quite a shock; I've been amazed at how high 'Ready Brek' is and how low sliced ham is. My diet has pretty much always been low(ish) fat but I'm horrified at the amount of carbs I've been eating.
This site is great, very helpful, and more information available than you ever knew you needed to know.0 -
hello and welcome to MFP! I know all about those 12 hr shifts, they will kill good eating habits quickly if you don't monitor and plan for the day. I was shocked when I first started by what exactly was in everything I was eating. yikes! Good luck to you!0

Since I started this new WOE, I feel like I've spent more time in the grocery reading product labels than at home or work! It's amazing what's in the products most people eat every day. Now even gum gets scrutinized before it goes in my basket.0

^ hahha yeah I've noticed how long it took me to food shop the other day, I only spent £10 but it took me 30 minutes of reading packets and working out what meals I could make with the low cal food0

Hello and welcome to MFP! It can definitely be a shock when you go from eating whatever you want to paying attention to what you're eating. I think a lot of people would be shocked if they had any idea how unhealthy they really eat.. just because they aren't fat they don't worry about health!
Good on you for starting a healthy lifestyle!0 -
Welcome aboard! Feel free to add me, if you don't mind crazy California girls!0

OH.. Scotch eggs and Ready Brek.. Haven't had either in years, not Since I moved to Canada. I used to love both these foods as a kid. Had no idea they were unhealthy. I'll have to google their nutritional values.
Welcome to MFP and congrats on making those changes in your life.
I've got a desk job and didn't even really notice the lbs piling on until I was cleaning out some paperwork at home and found a scrap of paper with weight and measurements from 2 years ago. I was traumatized to see I'd gained 20 lbs and more invhes than I wanted to calculate.
Everyone feel free to send me an invite. I'm on here everyday
Good luck with your journey.0
