New to running, need advice...

I started training for a 5k a couple of weeks ago using the "couch to 5k" schedule. So far so good, BUT, I am finding that from my knees down really hurt in the last week. It starts just above my knees and goes down my shins to just above my ankles and wraps around to the back of my calves. I have been working out for about a month to month and a half before starting to run.
I have no problem working through discomfort if it is part of the training but I also don't want to injure myself. The other night my hubby rubbed down my legs thoroughly (what a guy) and that helped immensely, but I can't have him do that every night.
Thoughts...suggestions...direction...
