Anxiety/Depression

Interesting tidbits from a training I went to recently:
Psychologists are now routinely assessing nutrition and exercise in mental health assessments.

Exercise is an effective treatment for mild-moderate depression.

Initial researchers felt that one of the key distinctions between anxiety and depression was that anxiety did not respond to exercise as a form of treatment. However, they now believe that this is because exercise can mimic the effects of panic (i.e., increased heart rate etc). However if clients are able to push through the initial feelings of panic associated with exercise it is a highly effective form of exposure therapy.

Interesting connection. Obviously depression has an effect on self care, including exercise, but I never considered it the other way around. Wish I had known this years ago....of course then I wouldn't have cared about these findings:ohwell:
