Peanut Butter

Hey guys I want to add in peanut butter to my chocolate protein shake mostly for the flavor. I remember reading (somewhere) we shouldn't be eating normal peanut butter because of the sugar (or something).

What type of Peanut Butter should I be eating? (Sorry if this is on the forum somewhere I have no time to search :( OMW out the door for work and going to buy some Peanut Butter from Trader Joe's on my way in).

Look for one that says "Ingredients: Peanuts"

Or look for PB2 powdered peanut butter, which has about half the calories and is great in shakes but terrible when reconstituted to spread on something.

People say that the reason to avoid "regular" peanut butter is because of trans-fat. It's really a non-issue, eat whichever type you like the best.

I have Smart Balance All Natural Rich Roast, Creamy peanut butter. It's an excellent source of Omega-3, no hydrogenated oil, no refined sugar, 0g trans fat (read label, lol). It's 190 calories for 2 tbsp.

Look at the ingredients, and besides sugar, make sure there isn't any stabilizers or extra oils added (so, as the other poster put it, ingredients: Peanuts). This will make the peanut butter separate, but just stir it up before scooping it out- you'll never go back to the old stuff again!

Trader Joe's has some great peanut butter.

Just get peanut butter with nothing else added. The only ingredient in peanut butter should be PEANUTS!

"Without the sugar"? Natural peanut butter doesn't have any more sugar than PB2.

Wouldn't have thought of adding it to milk. Will have to try that :)

But it does have sugar. The ingredients are peanuts, salt, sugar. Plus no peanut butter is sugar free because peanuts naturally contain sugar.
  • You can make your own in a blender; that way you know exactly what's gone into it:

I use Real brand peanut butter in my shakes. It's actually very "real" with nothing added yet it gives the shake that extra something. I also use Justin's Almond Maple Butter, which is delightful.

  • I love PB2 ... mainly because it taste just like "regular" peanut butter without all the calories (I eat a lot of peanut butter, lol). Whatever you do do not try calorie free Walden's Farm peanut butter I found it at Wal-Mart and tried it and I imagine eating wall spackle would taste better it was by far the nastiest stuff I'd ever tasted.

PB2 contains added sugar as well as defatted peanut flour. If you want to go this route, just buy defatted, or partially defatted peanut flour--it's less expensive and there isn't any added sugar. Another alternative is to buy natural peanut butter (which will contain peanuts, possibly along with salt or a small amount of oil for roasting, but nothing else). You can let this sit, sealed, for a while, maybe a month, and the oil will separate out to the top, then just pour the oil off the top. The result is natural, reduced fat, peanut butter.

edit to add..I buy it from Amazon. I think it is cheaper. But the link is for the place that makes it. They grind peanuts after they do a cold press to make extra virgin peanut oil. I like it for the ease and taste in my protein shakes.
