"If you're tired of starting over, quit giving up"

I am starting over. Again.

Now with new hours, I am at work for both lunch and dinner. I have some time in the morning to prepare meals for the day, but I need quick snack ideas for in between. I have a habit of buying things that are fake-healthy--prepackaged bars, low-fat cookies--things that are easy to grab and go. I need ideas for quick snacks that I can sneak away and munch on while at work. Things that are easy to throw in my cooler. I'm headed to the grocery store in the morning and need more ideas..I tend to get bored with the same snacks I always eat... fat free yogurt w/fresh fruit slices, fresh broccoli/cauliflower/cucumber. I need new exciting ideas! Help!

  • Good to hear you're back on! Step by Step, Day by Day!!!

Here are some great REAL healthy snacks that I recommend...

    1) Sugar Snap Peas. They are DELISH raw... just peel off the two "ends", wash them and dry them and you can pack them in little sandwich bags that make it so easy to transport and snack on!

    2) Brussel's Sprouts- You can buy these either fresh or frozen. If frozen, cook them a little in the microwave... Coat the sprouts with a bit of olive oil and whatever seasoning you like... and broil them in the oven... Let them get a little charred on the outside... you'll love them. They have a warm, nutty flavor to them.. So delish you'll think it's super UNhealthy... but it couldn't be more different. Brussel's Sprouts are SO healthy for you (little natural colon cleansers). Plus, this snack is both delish cold or hot... I will sometimes make a lot in advance and then put them in the fridge and eat them whenever I feel a salty craving coming on... they're easy to pop in your mouth at your desk (just be advised that these little round suckers can be quite.... fragrant sometimes) lol

    3) Light Kettle Corn- If you have a Trader Joe's, you should try their individual bags of kettle korn, light. They come in a package of six... and each package is individually wrapped for exactly one portion size, equaling 110 cals per back. Now I don't know about you... but i LOVE kettle corn. I find myself torn between salty and sweet goodness when I'm craving a snack (so sometimes I eat both... blah i know... but it happens). So having kettle corn is the best of both worlds. Now when I used to be too lazy to drive out to TJ's... I would just go to the grocery store and either get the 100 calorie packs of kettle corn by PopSecret that you need to microwave pop... OR I would get the BIG, BIG bags of the microwavable kettle corn (LIGHT VERSION) and just pop it and bag them in little sandwich bags myself... It's A LOT cheaper this way... but I find that the popcorn gets stale... even though my ziplock bags are "air-tight" shut.... but anyway... I think that healthy low calorie popcorn with no additives or butter/seasonings are a great and healthy snack... and think about all of the fiber you're taking in!!

    4) Stone Fruits- Now that summer is approaching, I'm sure you'll be noticing a lot of stone fresh fruits popping up in your local grocery store produce section. White peaches, yellow peaches, apricots, plums... these are all examples of stone fruits that are SO delish and super juicy... they are tart and sweet... full of juice and just perfect to get you in the cheery summer mood... even at 4:15PM on a slow Wednesday at your desk. The clean up for these fruits are a breeze, since all you'll have to do is toss the big pit!

    5) Prunes- These ARE NOT... ARE NOT a grandma snack! I love prunes... especially since they are one of the healthier dried fruit varities... they are the perfect size for popping in your mouth... and they're not covered in fruit juice... sugars... or anything else. All you see is all you get. I love how they are perfectly sweet and chewy... GREAT for when you feel like you need some gummy bears.

    Good luck darling :)

Something that is a little unusual is roasted chick peas. They are crunchy and saltly like chips but so much better for you!

Ever tried adding humus with those veggies instead of dip or even raw? You could always make a batch of home-made granolas, add in dried fruits such as cranberries, a variety of nuts and seeds and make a batch, cut in say...2 inch or so cubes and bring 1-2 along. You could also switch around the fruits you eat and add blackberries, strawberries and whatever else in there...Homemade fruit salad is also good - when we make some we go through an enormous bowl at least once a week. Cut up fruits, melons, whatever fruits you like - add in real fruit juice and voilà!

How about adding other proteins? Ryvita crisp bread is great and has good fibre..you can spread on a wedge of laughing cow light for a lovely treat.. a nice combo of creamy and crunchy! You could try a tablespoon of light peanut butter on the same or something low fat / low sodium like a stoned wheat thins crackers or good old melba toast. We also have something here called poppers that are light a thing rice cake shaped like a bowl (19 cals, no fat, no sodium).. I crunch them like chips or use to dip in hummus, greek yogurt or tzatziki.
Nuts can be a nice option too.. I carry a small zip-lock bag of 6-8 almonds for a protein pick-me-up.Unsalted peanuts work well too.
I don't know if you can carry a cooler bag to keep things cold.. if so, perhaps some light cheese or a hard boiled eggs.
    hope these hints help!
