Is sushi a good idea?

I am having some major sushi cravings but i'm not sure how healthy a choice it is??? all that white rice and there might be mayo on some.
I was thinking
Edamame
Miso Soup
Sushi Pizza (mayo with rice base)
and
Green Dragon (which is basically salmon, Avocado, row and lettuce)
I read somewhere that miso soup is good for you and promotes healthy enzymes??
I'm going to research it a bit myself.

Sushi is my favorite food.... hands down!
But I also admit that I am a sashimi gal. which if ordering just the fish (not nigiri, which is the piece of fish sitting over the palm size mound of rice). If the group I am with orders a roll, I will indulge 1 piece of it, but not if it has mayo. the rice is a no-no enough for me, so I try to minimize the bad stuff.
I love miso. i haven't researched it, and look forwadr to anything you find. ~
I give in to my sashimi cravings about every 2 weeks! (or less!)

I love sushi so I'm biased. However most sushi is good. If you get it sashimi style you avoid the rice. But a little white rice isn't going to kill you and if you have the calories available for the ones with mayo why not?0

Sushi in general is quite healthy. You can look up different rolls on www.calorieking.com if you can't find values for them on here, though either way it's probably not exact. I would only do the dragon roll if you have a few extra calories though; I know when I get it here it has lightly battered & fried shrimp on it, while not greasy the batter an the extra sauces that are often on it aren't the best. The rice isn't bad for you though its not even regular white rice, it is sticky rice, which is more similar to jasmine rice (better for you than white rice). I say enjoy your sushi but in moderation.0

Yeah I'd make caloric room for the rice, but the raw fish and edamame are soooo good for you!!! Keep the soy sauce low sodium too, you'd be surprised how much better you can taste the flavor of the sushi when its not drowned in salt.0

I also do sushi at least once or twice a week, and I DO eat a little white rice! Even 4 rolls with rice would have less than 1/4 cup cooked rice.
To me, the brown is just too heavy, and too nutty in flavour for the other delicate flavours that are going on. I find it to be light tasting, and light in my tummy, and the calories are very low for such an indulgence!
Just work it into your day - and I'm guessing you have nothing "white" in your house, so it is a fine treat!
ENJOY!!!

i made my own sushi yesterday for the first time!! it was so much fun and incredibly delicious. it's nice to make it yourself because you can control what goes in it: i used brown rice instead of the typical white, and i filled it with cucumber, avocado and smoked salmon. you can buy nori wraps very cheaply at an asian supermarket ($1.99, but might cost more at health food stores). there are several online websites that teach you how to make it, all of which recommended you use a bamboo wrap, a very helpful rolling tool.0

WOW!! That is great! I had a very good friend in University who was born in Japan, and she was a wiz, and we tried making it once - mine tasted good, but the visual appeal was lacking! Let's just say it is an art!!

The "crust" for the sushi pizza is usually tempura-fried, so probably not the best choice. I love the green dragon roll, but one of those is usually between 400-500 calories (avocado+tempura shrimp+mayo=high calorie).
I would say the sushi pizza or the roll, and maybe a seaweed salad or something else light that would fill you up without all the extra fried treats.

We make our own sushi here at home (we live in Michigan's UP, so there's no place to go get it!). We've gotten very good at making the rolls, and have done our own tuna nigri (sp?) a few times, and have gotten much better at it. We've tried making the sticky rice with brown rice only once, but it did not turn our well. Everything fell apart on us. So we stick to using the jasmine rice when making sticky rice.0 -
God yes! I always use low sodium. And I made an error of sorts, I usually have 'Maki Sushi' - which are the rolls.
But, according to my research (I feel like Dorothy Ann from Magic School Bus) Here is the run down on Miso
- It is high in B12! (which is great for keeping up your metabolism)
- Two tablespoons can deliver as much as 2 grams of protein for only 25 calories!!!
- great for energy.
- The draw back is that it is high in sodium. (one ounce is about 52% of you daily sodium intake)
Edamame
- is a soybean and thus a great source of protien. (Soy beans have been called a super legume)
- It provides an antioxidant boost
- half a cup of edamame provides 11grams of protien, 9 grams of fibre!! at 120 cals and 11g carbs.
So Basically both are a great choice. (and of course dont forget your green tea) Everyone's advice on Maki was essentially right. The rice isn't great, but the fish is very healthy for you. Stay low on mayo and make caloric room for the entire meal in daily plan.
Thanks all for your help!
Please be aware that my research is obviously not conclusive and was the result of a very superficial search. There is much more info out there for anyone interested.

oh! I should mention that I'm sharing the meal. So it's abut half a serving of both the Green dragon and the sushi pizza (which I LOVE, so I cant skip)
All this research is making me so hungry!!0
