biking calories

I just bought a bike and love it. I wore my polar FT4 HRM and went for a 7 mile ride. It said I burned 368 calories..cool! Now, how accurate is it. Does biking really burn that many calories? Will it help with weight loss?

Depending on effort and terrain.... I burn between 40-60 calories per mile while biking. I love it! It's a nice break from running.... and it's a great way to get around!0

I read somewhere that you burn more cycling than running.
It'll also help with leg muscles and toning up your thighs0 -

Depends upon the bike and the terrain. In 8 miles of hard mountain biking I probably burn about the same calories as I do on an 8 mile road run on easy terrain. My bike is heavy and I suck at mountain biking. 8 miles on my 17# road bike...no friggin' way. I can do that in <30 minutes without pushing myself at all. It's all relative.
In general, though, most people will find that road biking vs. road biking burns 1/3-1/4 the calories.0
