I have been running consistently since the end of January, increasing milage 10 percent per week. I have done a few 9 and 10 mile runs and my knee starts to hurt a bit, but is managable and i take a rest day after that lng run and am fine by th following day. But, this weekend around mile 7 it really started tobug me. I slowed down a lot, and by 9.5 miles i was heading down a hill, it hurt so bad i had to walk down the hill. I did manage to run up it. So that was saturday, took sunday and monday off, did 5 miles tonight and struggled on the last mile. It is my right knee, on the outside, almost the middle to lower part of the knee. Any thoughts?

    Google IT Band.

Classic symptoms. Need to do stretches for it.

BE CAREFUL! If it hurts, don't run. You can cause more damage by trying to keep going then stopping and resting for a time. I did something similar, and now can't run more then 10mins before the pain begins. Turns out its a hamstring and have been off runninf since March 26th. Still can't run , but have pushed too fast so now have to scale back, keep doing physio and hope in a month after no running even short bursts that there is some relief. See massage and physio if at all possible to pinpiont the trouble and work to strengthen and rehab it.

I just went to the physiotherapist for exactly this problem -- IT band syndrome. It can originate in the hip (strength issues in some of the glute muscles or the hip) or the knee itself. Great stretches available, and rollers a big help, but the balance of strength and stability needs some work so that it doesn't keep coming back. See a good physiotherapist and take some time off (biking usually ok). Good luck!
