Chest strap will give you the most accurate read and I think that almost all of them come with the chest strap. Suprisingly comfortable too. I have a Polar and I love it. There are so many models to choose from, depending on what you want it to do. I got a very simple model (FT4) because I just want to know my HR and calorie counts for a particular workout. Runners would recommend a different one that can do splits/lap and that sort of thing. Mine is waterproof so you can use it for swimming too.

I have hear that Timex ones are a bit inaccurate. I found that going online to Amazon and reading the reviews was a good place to start. Amazon was $20 cheaper than my local sporting goods store.

    Good Luck!
