Yall eat applesauce? I like to let it age in my fridge...
The only reason I buy unsweetened applesauce is to use it instead of eggs in my cakes, muffins, and the occasional cookie baking extravaganza. That's like 2/3 a cup of applesauce per egg...after which I have zero use for a giant jar of unsweetened applesauce that I feel to guilty for throwing in the trash. Then I throw it in the trash a month later.
Any ideas of what else to do with copious amounts of unsweetened applesauce? I'm a low-carb kinda gal and it's working with a lot of carbs right off the bat...So I need a protein-y facelift for it!

I have the same issue, so after googling it, I learned you can freeze applesauce...so I did, in small rubbermaid tubs. I might even try ice cube trays next time.0

Weeelll, I used to have the same problem, but I started buying the little individual snack cups, so it's just enough for what I need and I don't end up wasting a bunch. Yeah, it's a bit more trash, but I think it ends up being less wasteful than having to throw away almost a full jar. I feel your pain! However, if you get a bunch of recipes in this thread, maybe I'll start buying the jars again!

It does freeze well.
Maybe you could buy the small single serving packs (they come in 6s or so) then you can pull them out as you need them rather than having a whole jar in the fridge0 -
I buy Materne applesauce pouches (yes, they laugh at me while I squeeze it out like a five year old!). They are only 60 cals each, make a good emergency snack while driving by McDonald's hungry and the are the right size for recipes. i get them at Costco in Colorado, but they should be available most anywhere.0

-Mix it with nuts, fresh herbs and sausagemeat and you have a nice stuffing for chickens/turkey or pork loin.
- Use it in braised red cabbage cooked slowly with shredded cabbage, applesauce, spices (cinnamon, nutmeg) and onions.
- 10 minute apple sorbet: http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2010/12/how-to-use-leftover-applesauce-sorbet-recipe.html (sub the sugar for splenda or low carb equivalent)
- Mix into natural yoghurt.
- Have on low carb pancakes with cinnamon.
- Chutney for cheeses/cold meats: Add a splash of vinegar, a tsp of splenda, some raisins/sultanas, a pinch of mixed spice and some chopped veg (zucchini/courgette works well)0 -
It freezes very well, so you can buy it in larger containers and freeze recipe-sized portions of it if you want. Or simply buy smaller containers.
I make my own applesauce in the fall and can it myself. In quarts. It never has time to go bad in the fridge. Nom nom nom!0 -
i like to put it in oatmeal along with cinnamon and nutmeg, and maybe some almonds. doesn't matter what kind of oats... i mostly use quick oats because they're, well, quick. :bigsmile:0

I use it as a condiment for pork chops. Yum.0

As others have said, I would freeze it in small batches.
I do this with broth as well if I don't need the whole can.0
