How long does it take to start gaining muscle mass. I am doing 30 day shred by Jillian Michaels. I did 5 days of level one and one day of level 2. I checked this morning, I gained 1lb. Would that be muscle wt.? Tomorrow is my official weigh in.

Nope, that would be water retention. Muscle mass takes lots and lots of hours and calories to build it.

Muscle doesn't build that fast. My best guess, for it to be noticable to the eye, would be 8 weeks, maybe more depending on your current body fat %. To see it on the scale...that depends on if you are losing fat as well. I would doubt that you would see a noticable difference on the scale for muscle gain with 30DS.

The gains you are seeing in the first few months are water and glycogen stored in the muscle. You can't actually gain muscle fibers until you've been training consistently for about 6 months. Prior to that, you have to store more glycogen (and 3 times as much water as glycogen to store it in) in the muscle to lay the ground work for more muscle fibers.

For me since I don't go into a heavy Surplus (if I do it usually was junk.. LOL, trying to change that) and having taken notice of my protein and lifting more proper, etc etc.. I found my body has really changed in the last year.. Mainly from August of 2011 to now I see a big difference.. For me it's been a steady process.. I guess it depends on the person, their dedication, their food intake, their genetics, etc.

I forgot to mention that I also started walking about 60 min everyday. I think it might be water wt. as some of you mention. I don't know! Should I stop so that I can lose more wt., or should I continue with the exercises.? Thnaks.
