I reap the benefits of smoking, without hurting my lungs by eating the tobacco. I still buy a pack every 3 days or so, but I eat the contents, rather than smoke them. I like to use the leaves in marinades and Italian dressing.
I really hope that's sarcasm. Just because you aren't inhaling it, doesn't mean it's not doing any damage.

I'm bypassing my lungs, but reaping the benefits. It's the best of both worlds, really.

    ummm...what benefits?

After landing in the ER with an asthma attack less than a month after I started MFP, I quit smoking. I haven't gained any weight since quitting about 3 months ago. Yeah, I craved food more than I otherwise would have. Part of it is the hand-to-mouth habit, and part of it is just having the "crave" feeling, and it's easy to substitute food for cigs. Quitting smoking may temporarily make losing weight a little harder but when it comes down to it, the reason people gain weight from quitting smoking is because they substitute food for cigs.

For me personally, quitting smoking actually helped me lose weight because I was able to work out without becoming out of breath almost immediately and now I actually like working out. Unfortunately, I was smoking for over 10 years so my lungs are still recovering and my asthma is still bothering me, making working out difficult. Smoking wasn't worth this.

If it was that good a suppressant you wouldn't see any fat smokers.

When a smoker finishes their meal they often go and have a cigarette which signifies the meal is finsished. When they quit smoking that "meal finished" feeling is not there this can lead to a lot of extended eating hence the weight gain. I am speaking from experience here as a lifetime smoker and quitter. Smoking is extremely addictive we all know that but it isn't just the nicotine it is the habitual/ritual of smoking that is incredibily hard to break.

However the good news is that although quitters often gain weight initially you are so much fitter that working out is easier and you can drop the weight pretty quickly.

I can understand people my age being addicts, everyone smoked, doctors recommended it, we didn't know the dangers blah blah you know the drill

But why do kids start these days knowing all the things we didn't :noway:

Appetite suppression, and to be honest -- taste. It adds a whole new dimension to the food I eat.

I was mostly being sarcastic because I am a heavy smoker.

But....you may be bypassing your lungs, but you aren't bypassing your blood stream.

But...I have no room to talk because I'm not bypassing either. Not trying to be a hypocrite by saying what you are doing is wrong, just think you should know that it can still cause tons of damage by eating it.

I quit smoking on Jan 7th- I have not gained one single pound.

I quit smoking on August 11th, and didn't gain either. In fact, I lost.

Smoking is horrible. And you shouldn't do it.

I quit smoking December 8th, 2008 and gained about 20 lbs. Minimum.

My doc hasn't said anything about it. The warnings on the label are all about smoking the leaves. It's great -- you should try it.

I will admit I started smoking when I was 17 for the pure fact I wanted to lose weight. How dumb. I regret that decision every day of my life. I didn't end up quitting until recently--17 years later!!

I did not lose weight btw, please do not start smoking for this reason!!!!!!!!!!!!

Smoking is very unhealthy for you and I would urge you to not take this up in order to control your food intake.

Alternatively, I'd recommend taking a hot steamy dump on your kitchen table. Let it sit there and be sure to close all your windows and doors so that the house gets nice and humid, fermenting the table-log. This should have the same appetite supressing effects as smoking, without the health concerns!

Thanks, glad I could help and good luck OP!
^^^This works, by the way. I tried it and look at how much weight I lost!

I dont understand how it increases the metabolism ? I WAS a smoker for 28 years, was diagnosed with HYPOthyroidism (LOW Metabolism) 22 years into smoking, had NO energy all my life, have gained almost a 100 pounds in the last 28 years. Since I quite I know my BLOOD PRESSURE has decreased significantly, and my weight has maintained for the last 2 yrs. Are you sure the metabolism speeds up and not the blood pressure.

Yikes! Dont know if you ask this because you're considering it, or just to know. I can tell you that I've been smoking way too long and I was overweight. My new mission is to quit. Smoking is a nasty habit, it makes your hair smell, your clothes, everything. I wish I never picked up that cigarette at 19, now I'm 42 and while I have no respiratory issues at the moment, I'm sure I will.
It doesnt make sense to try and live a healthy lifestyle and continue smoking....you know?
If you were thinking about it, dont do it. You'll be so better off with healthy lungs :)

I'm not condoning smoking. I personally am a smoker, and I'm not looking for a lecture by admitting that... I just wouldn't recommend adding the habit as a way to curb hunger. You're better off drinking water and just eating.

However, medically speaking, nicotine speeds up the metabolism. This is part of why people who smoke tend to lose weight... I'm sure if I smoked more than I do, I'd see this effect, but I couldn't do that.
It doesn't make you want to stop eating... It can be used as a replacement, as I learned during bouts of anorexia, but it doesn't remove hunger. What it does is damper your taste buds so that foods are not as yummy as when you aren't smoking.

Smoke enough, it'll make you nauseous, you won't want to eat then :P

Oh, just as devil's advocate, not all smokers are going to see the same impact. I recently had bronchitis, and had a pulmonary function test done. While having bronchitis AND smoking off and on for over 10 years, my lungs work at 125% capacity, and the lung specialist actually told me that my smoking habit was pretty nominal. Not saying that it's a wonderful thing BUT there's a huge difference between smoking a few cigs a day, and smoking a pack or more.

This might be the most ridiculous post I have ever read.

Not sure why you said that, seeing as all of the above is TRUE. If you think it's ridiculous, try doing some research into it. Plus, my account of my medical situation is 100% accurate, I've had more than one doctor tell me that my 2-4 cigs a day would have little to no serious impact on my health. If you tell a doctor that you can't measure the amount in packs per day, they'll say, well, you probably should quit but... Like mine, he wants me to focus on the weight first, cuz the smoking just isn't bad enough to put the weight second.

I noticed that when I did smoke, and I did it at work, I was ALWAYS the ONLY person who smoked the whole time I ate. Everyone else said it made them feel gross if they did both at the same time. They'd either eat first, then smoke (or vice versa) or eat in one room and smoke in the other.

people often gain weight when they quit because nicotine is a stimulant. it curves your appetite and increases your heat rate/blood pressure. in turn increasing your metabolism slightly.

xP its not healthy at all though of course.

As a former smoker and as an emotional eater, I found the relationship to be that I used the smoking as a "comfort device"... something to do with my mouth sort of thing. When I did not smoke any longer, I of course turned to food to fill the void... Neither is healthy. Gym and exercise do far more to help alleviate the stressors and are far more healthy. If you enjoy inhaling the ingredient found in rat poison, go ahead and try smoking... Otherwise, I suggest finding a healthier alternative to tendency to overeat... (LOL)...

I quit two weeks ago. Yes, I could definitely smoke instead of eat. Matter of fact when I joined this site my avg daily intake was 900 calories. Once I ate 2000 I started dropping weight. I don't think I would start smoking in effort to lose weight though. Kinda silly to trade off not being able to breathe and cancer for a dress size.

THIS is the TRUTH! The Original Poster was NOT asking about STOPPING Smoking and Weight Gain/Loss, She asked about STARTING SMOKING to Lose Weight!

To the O.P. : Have YOU seen ALL of those FAT/Overweight/Obese SMOKERS? NOW they have 2 MAJOR Health Issues, with Co-Morbidities that will/are off the charts. There is NO Rational Reason for Anyone to Start Smoking or doing Drugs or Continue to Neglect Your Health...Except that You Really can not understand Your Mortality>>>AND Many Don't until they start Losing Things, like: Lungs, Breath, Colon, Limbs, Eye sight, Mobility, Sexual prowess, ...

It's about GOOD HEALTH and GOOD Habits, NOT Trading One BAD Addiction for Another BAD Addiction, and then You realize that you haven't Traded but you have 2 Deadly Habits!

There are people would actually risk death/cancer/disease...to drop a dress size! What a poor commentary on Society, and most of all those persons who think so low of themselves...their self worth is actually wrapped up in a dress size and unfortunately they also measure others by what they think of themselves. SAD! That's why My Friend started smoking 25 yrs ago (she was tall and "heard" she could stop her growth if she started smoking) she started smoking, she's still tall, and 25 yrs of SMOKE in her face makes her look like she just went 12 Rounds with Mike Tyson! She tried to get Me to smoke wen I was a kid but something inside of Me just wouldn't/couldn't...I guess all kids do not succumb to peer pressure, Thank-GOD!
