I just read an article in Fitness Rx Magazine about Rowing machines and how there a great cardio & total body workout. I never thought of using one before but after reading this article I can see why it would whip you into shape. They have one at the gym I go to and I really want to try it.

I would love to buy one, but the really good ones are around $1,000. So maybe one day lol.

Has anyone had any experience with rowing machines, if so are they that good of a workout?

I was a rower in college. Div 1 varsity. I spent most of my free time either on one of those things or actually on the water. And yes, they do give you an insane workout.

Just make sure your form is down properly; it's very easy to use it incorrectly (the first week of novice crew practice was entirely getting to know the machines and it took us longer than that to actually use proper form) and not only will it make your workout less efficient, you also run the risk of hurting yourself.

This video is a good breakdown of how it works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqVmMd7FdAA

Good luck and hopefully you'll have fun!

I mix up my cardio at the gym and do the rowing machine about once a week. It is a great workout for my arms and cardio as well. I do tend to find it a little boring.
