Protein supplements and weight loss?

Is it reasonable to take a protein supplement when you've got about 20kgs to lose?
I've always thought they were for the already skinny, who just wanted to build muscle or train up for competition.
And of course I definitely want to build a lot of muscle, but for some reason I feel like protein shakes or whatever will hinder fat loss.
Should I be taking protein supplements?
If so, what kind?

I'm actually very curious about myself since I've started taking these protein shots.
I've noticed that after I take them...the next day I'm not NEARLY as sore as I would be with out taking it. It's weird....lol!0 -
If you are not reaching your protein target through regular food then go ahead and take a protein supplement. It's cheap and easy protein. That's all there is too it. Nothing magical or mystical like some of the marketing would lead you to believe.0
