My dad was a pilot, we lived in a ranch hour in Kenya that backed off to a Masai escarpment and I grew up with giraffes, antelopes, gazelles and elephants in my back yard and my playmates were masai children. I seriously had an amazing childhood full of nature, wildlife and a love of ecology, athropology and preserving the environment right from when I was a baby.0

We also used to take my DADS sweats and put them on and then stuff as much clothes as possible in them and pretend to be sumo wrestlers lol.... things we did when dad was sleeping and mom was at work lol

If you haven't jumped off the roof of a house into the shallow end of a pool..
If you haven't played "Tag" with Roman Candles on the 4th of July...0 -
Close, sliding down the steps in a sleeping bag to avoid the lava
We did this too, but with either the bunk bed mattress or the sofa pillows, but only when our parents weren't home. :bigsmile:0 -
Me and best girlfriend used to make up dance routines and perform them on my porch, 'cause our house sat up on a hill. We can still do the routine to "We Are Family" if you ask nicely.
My cousin and I used to roller skate in my basement with the record player blasting music. We dressed up in old frilly nightgowns that belonged to our moms and aunts, made up dance routines, and told everyone our group was called "The Elvis Angels."
My dad used to turn the lights out on us when we were doing that and we'd go careening into the walls and metal posts, screaming our heads off. NOT cool.
We also used to tape record ourselves acting out commercials, scenes from soaps, and old TV shows. I think I still have a couple of those tapes somewhere. Oh yeah -- and I still have the tape I made of "Live Aid" after camping out in the living room for 10 hours and holding the microphone up to the TV speaker. Classic.
**yeah, I'm that OLD. **0 -
One of our neighbors gave me a cocoon he found, he told me it was a locust... I kept that freakin thing for like 6 months and it still wriggled around and then one day it died, it never hatched. I was so sad.
I kept a cocoon I found for a month or so, thinking it was a monarch butterfly. Once morning I came downstairs, and inside the jar was this gigantic, hairy, UGLY moth thing as big as my head. It looked like a monster. :noway: Turned me off of the whole cocoon thing for a LOOOONG time.0 -
Top 10 fun things I did as a child of the 70's in Kentucky:
1. Lava couch - definitely
2. skateboarded (the old skinny hard plastic ones) with a rope tied to my friend's bicycle.
3. Climbed trees barefooted
4. Played in the creek and caught salamanders and crawdads
5. participated in a neighborhood talent show for all the parents
6. rollerskated in my basement
7. drank suicides at the ballpark (a suicide is a drink that combined coke, sprite, orange crush and mellow yellow or mt. dew)
8. sat outside on hot summer night listening to the insects and picking all the honeysuckles off the bushes so I could suck the nectar out.
9. played marco polo and chicken fight in my best friend's pool
10. Had sleepovers and watched Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street (the originals) and stayed up all night because we were too scared to go to sleep!
I loved my childhood!!! It was definitely A.W.E.S.O.M.E.!!!0 -
