Another day of our education of the 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth. Woo Hoo! Some of these you won't be surprised by, some you will. I'll take one out of each food group each day to mix it up a bit.
All information is from the book by jonny Bowden, Ph.D., C.N.S. "The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth".
Day 27: Asparagus
Intro: Here's an interesting little trivia about asparagus: They're one of the only plants that have distinct male and female versions. And if you'd like a dollopp or irony with that factoid, the maile lants are skinny and the females are ... well, Rubenesque. To comound the political incorrectness, it's the fresh young lants that are the most desirable--they taste the best. On the other hand, when allowed to mature, a gorgeous fern develops. You can't eat it, but it makes one of the most beautiful hanging plants around.
* The root is used in traditional Indian medicine as a diuretic and to strengthen the female reproductive system
* The asparagus root is also believed to help develop peace of mind, a loving nature, a good memory, and a calm sperit.
* Chinese traditionalists save the best roots of the plant for thier familites and friend, believing that it will increase feelings of compassion and love.
* In India it's used to promote fertility, reduce menstrual cramping, and increase milk production in nursing mothers.
* In India, the racemosa species is used to increase sperm count and nourish the ovum
* In the Western world, asparagus has long been touted as an aphrodisiac. I was unable to find any scientific evidence for it's ability to make people amorous, but the legen remains, probably due to the vegetable's phallic shape.
* Asaragus, like most fruits and vegetables, has a very favorable ration of potassium to sodium. A cup of cooked asparagus contains a whopping 404mg of potassium, as well as 268 mcg of folate, a very important B vitamin that helps prevennt neural tube defects and helps reduce a harmful blood chemical called homocysteine
* High in vitamin K, essential for healthy clotting and for strong bones.
* Contains rutin, which helps protect blood vessels, and the anti-inflammatory, cancer-fighting flavonoid quercetin
* A cup of cooked asparagus gives you a decent 3.6 g of fiber, all for a ridiculously low number of calories (40)
* Best of all, there's serious published research showing that compounds in asparagus have antitumor activity.
* Crude saponins from asparagus inhibit the growth of human leikemia cells.
* Asaparagus is high in glutathione, one of the body's most important antioxidants
* Asparagus contains inulin, a special kind of fiber that feeds the good bacteria in your gut and helps support gastrointerstinal health
