ever since I uppped my water intake I seem to be having a harder time to lose weight. What's up with that? It's driving me crazy. My diet isn't perfect all the time so I know that's part of it but I drink a min of 10 glasses of water a day!

Years ago someone put forth the idea that we all needed to drink 8 glasses of water a day. Perhaps it came from a series of studies in the 1940s after which the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine opined that the “RDA” for water should be roughly 1 ml per calorie consumed. At their recommended 2000 calories a day, that worked out to 2 liters a day, or roughly 8 eight-ounce glasses. Lost in the translation somewhere was an important caveat that much – if not most – of the water we required could actually be obtained from the foods we eat. In other words, it simply was not necessary to actually drink 8 glasses a day.

I drink it when I get thirsty. Simple. Also before a meal I drink at least a glass, normally two, and I find that I don't eat as much.

I think drinking water helps to lose weight only if one/some of the following are true:

    1. Drinking water causes you to eat or drink less calories overall.
    2. You drink so much that you burn a significant number of calories running to the rest room.
    3. You think it helps (the placebo affect)

Remember, 8 glasses is a GUIDELINE based off of an average of the average person. This means that there will be people who need more and people who need less. I personally need less unless I am really working hard that day (like gardening for hours). It has not hurt my weight loss in any way.

The best way water helps with weight loss is if you are replacing high calorie drinks (sweet tea, soda, ect) with water. Right there you are decreasing your calories without any other change.

Thanks for all of the input and opinions. I'll give drinking more water a try for a month and see what happens. I'm sure it can't hurt. I tend to drink a lot more diet soda than I should.
