I'm a product of the 80's/90's which means everything i ate either came out of a box or can; velveeta canned veggies, banquet chicken... (and the sad part is my grandparents had a sm. Functional farm)
I had 2 kids with a man who had colon cancer ar the tender age of 20. We changed alot of our living conditions for the better, even food. its taken almost 15 years but i think we've found a good balance while still allowing our kids to be kids. I don't eat anything i wouldnt make my kids eat (doesn't mean there arent modifications) and i don't feed the kids anything i wouldnt eat, especially during my weightloss journey. I want my girls to have a healthy relationship with food fitness and thier body!!! So i sit down and have ice cream and brownies... but on 98% of days we only have dessert after a well thought out dinner. Snacks do not equal junk in my house, we have fruit or some healthy baked good, such as homemade banana bread...I even give em my fruit shakes (before the protein powder). They know mommy wants to lose a lil weight but my main goal is to be healthy and active and boy do i stress optimal nutrition to get the energy i need to get the lifestyle i want!!!
Whenever other children come over i find them saying they dont eat______ an awful lot. My nieces and nephews eat God awful crap all the time, they have medical issues (congenital heart disease, autism, diabetes type1) and while im almost certain these issues would have popped up no matter the diet, i cant help thinking how much better their quality of life could be! My neice with diabetes works her insulin around her diet instead of the other way around!!! Both my girls have been on antibiotics once ea. They dont get sick and are very active. I just see the differences and it makes me want to cry!
Ive lost 8 lb.s in the 80 days ive been on mfp (21 since the new year altogether) there have been many days my calories were in the red and it was ok ( omg did i just really say that) and other days i just didnt log so precisely (too busy living) because i knew that i was being a good role model to my girls, and i think that is my most important responsibility in life!!! I dont want to be so busy obsessing about food and weight that i forget to live my very blessed life

Forgot to mention that the girls are active participants in the acquisition and preparation of the food in the household. We tell em that they'll be the most popular girls in college0

Good post, especially good to hear that your kids are active in cooking and buying the food. Way too many people out there are unhealthy because they can't cook and don't know how to write a good grocery list! Your kids are lucky.
Congrats on your weight loss too, stick with it!0 -

Its so important to be a good role model with food choices! I still have my struggles, but for the most part we eat as a family.and I don't keep any junk in the house. I figure if its not good for then, its not good for me either. If we want treats, I usually come up with a healthier alternative and save the real treats for times we are out of the house!0 -
Love this post! NOW I think I'm a good food role model... before, when I had become a stay at home mama and put on most of this weight.. I would bake brownies, pasta salads and all sorts of stuff (in unhealthy ways I might add) and would eat half of it in one day! My kids talk about healthy foods giving them energy to play Tball and to run, and I'm glad they make that connection. One thing I'm not so happy about it is at my oldest's school they could only have snacks that were around 100 calories (milk was another 100 calories and for snack time they were allotted 200 calories... not sure if this is just our district or a nation wide deal), so my daughter (she's almost 7) is always asking me "Mom, does this have 100 calories in it? I can't have too many calories" I do NOT want her to be thinkin' about calories.
I'm not gonna feed them something that I wouldn't eat, but I don't always make the same thing for them as I do myself. Usually that's when it's a clean the fridge kinda night and they have baked chicken nuggets or corn dogs and mac and cheese... while I have leftovers... and we try to have salad with every meal. They LOVE salads!0 -

I hear you on this, but then again its a unit of measurement, and it might not be so horrible for children to learn the value of a calorie. For instance, show her the difference between 100 cal of carrots and 100 cal. Of potato chips.
I dont like the wording i guess, i think "healthy snack" may be better with guidelines sent to the parent at the beginning of the year. But i do understand that thats subjective and what one considers healthy another figures junk. I would bring it up, its these kinds of things that keep me very active in their school. Btw a banana is over 100 cal.!!!!!!0
