When to go Shopping for New Clothes

How do you know it's time to go down another size in pants? I don't want to go shopping for smaller pants/shorts because if I do, and they don't fit, I will get discouraged... I started in a 24 at 305 pounds... I m 245 now and can wear a 20 loosely. Scared to take that plunge to an 18. Any suggestions? lol

    try it on.

only suggestion, you don't have to buy yet if it doesn't fit properly.

when my jeans stretch out after not even a day where they are saggy in the rear, i need to size down!

I'm cheap so I go until the pants are near falling off. I know some people like the rush from going down but my pocketbook dictates I do it the other way.

You will get to the 18. No need to be scared if they don't fit. Buy them anyways and then you have something you can try on weekly with your weighing. It is encouragement.

I had some old pants from about 15 years ago that I pulled out that were 2 sizes too small when I started and now I am wearing them. Awesome feeling now and it was as I tried them on even when they were still a bit snug. Gave me something to work harder for.

    First, congratulations on your loss.

This is what I do. All of my in-between sizes come from thrift stores. When I go I buy one thing in the size I'm currently in and one thing in the next size lower. That way it feels like a treat when the smaller ones fit...and you're only out a couple dollars that way.

I started at 26 in pants at 330, shopped at 24-22, then 20. I just kept hoisting the 20s up and apparently I put off shopping so long I skipped 18 all together because I finally went shopping and I am now a 16. I say shop when you feel uncomfortable in the bigger clothes. For me that was when my pants were up to my boobs and I needed a belt to keep them on, lol.

I am hoping to just pass a couple of sizes and when I do shop, I will fit into hopefully a 16! lol That is what I would like to do. My husband doesnt like th way the baggy jeans look on my rear though! lol i may have to do like one girl said and go to a thrift shop for the in between sizes.

Im also a cheapskate, Ive been wearing pants that are too big for me since February. I contemplated buying smaller ones but then I realized I don't wear jeans or dress pants all summer so I didnt bother. I just belt it until I see a good pair on sale or I nab some hand me downs

Go in with an open mind and do not let the pant size dictate your success! Remember, brands vary drastically. I can wear a 12 in some things, a 14 in others. Also, the difference between a 14 misses and a 14 woman is a lot. Know that you're making progress! Anything smaller than when you started is progress!

The shopping for smaller cloths is my favorite part and my biggest motivation.. I lost 40 pounds on WW 5 years ago.. I made it a rule I wouldn't buy unless it fit... that doesn't mean I can squeeze into it that means fit and look good.

Congrats on the weight loss. I would try for the 18. IF they are a little tight then it will make you work a little harder to get in them.
    Keep up the good work

The thrift store is a great idea. I don't like to try on clothes any way, so I wait until my underpants are baggy. Then I try some on and get a different size.

I absolutely hate shopping for clothes, always have and it has nothing to do with weight. I put off buying new ones until I realized I spent more time in the day pulling them up than I should. Or when I walked the stairs and they would be down around my ankles by the time I got to the top (I wouldn't suggest that though, its rather embarrassing if you are in public). If you aren't at your goal, I'd definitely go for the thrift/consignment store option.

Oh and since someone else mentioned it, I do thrift shops for a lot of my clothes even when I wasn't losing weight -- that's a great suggestion. In some things I'm a 10, some an 11, some a 12 and a few a 14 some things medium and some things large so I'm all over the map, it's just easier, and you can probably find a lot of clothes that were barely or even never worn with tags still on

I bought size 10 gym tights for the first time in my life the other day I used to be a size 16. They give me a bit of a muffin top but I use that as further motivation!

Take the plunge! Congratulations on the loss ... If things are bagging out, time for an update! I agree that Thrift/Consignment is the way to go while you are in transition! Enjoy!

In the US, clothing designers assume about a two inch difference between sizes. If you could move the button of your pants over two inches and still fasten them then you're fairly safe trying on a lower size (depending on designer and style and whatnot).

I say just go for it! You won't know until you try .... just be prepared to be able to walk away if they don't fit. And I agree ... thrift stores can have wonderful finds. And the slightly 'worn' can also tend to be a little looser - as several people have said, every manufacturer makes sizes a little differently. Be prepared for that, and don't just give up after the first pair! I too don't like to try on clothes, but I needed some new uniforms for work, and was happy to find that I have managed to get out of the XL baggy style scrubs and into a L slimmer fitting pair. Good luck:flowerforyou:
  • thanks everyone. very good advice.

Stuff I hate buying, like work pants, I've sewn elastic in the back to get a few more kg out of them.

Really trying to buy as least as possible until I go on holiday to America in august and then I'll have a huge spend up there!

    Take the plunge!

I need to take it myself :) I know it's scary. But I recently bought another pair of pants that honestly, is just too big. Eeek. All that money :(

Ok, but what about bras.......When did you go and buy new ones?........the ones I have now cost around $50 each and I don't want to spend that much now only to find in a few months, that I need to buy more.......
  • On bras, I had some from my skinnier days that I am wearing now. Don't have to go buys those yet. And I wear sports bras alot since I work outside so much and do alot of physical work... My sister in law hada pair of 16's and I tried them on today to see where I was at... I knew that wouldn't fit, but they did button, just too tight. So, now I am pretty sure I could fit in a 18! Made me feel better. May go try to find some 18's at a thrift shop on a day off. :-)
