I've hit a plateau--ANY ADVICE?!

Hello all,

My name is Sylvia and have been on mfp for nearly 2 months and I've lost 10 pounds with no problem (yay!). I just weighed myself a few days ago, and found that I am still at the same weight I was 13 days ago. In between time, I have stuck to my usual healthy eating habits and exercised a little more than I did when I first started out. Does anyone have any advice? For those who've had this issue in the past and overcame it, how did you do it? Thank you in advance!

A plateau is 6 weeks without any weight loss so this is not a plateau. Exercising more might be causing this by retaining water to help heal your muscles or your are actually stressing your body too much.

    Wait and see what happen

ditto what yanicka said - it's natural for weight loss to stall for short periods of time, but what you are describing is not a plateau at this point.

I am not sure of your data but it looks like you are within 3 lbs of your goal which means you are really near maintenance. Looks like you have lost 9 out of 12 pounds you wanted to lose and by the photo you are really about where you need to be. I would not sweat these 3 lbs. Just eat right and exercise. If you are doing any weight training at this point (and you should be), you may be having a muscle mass increase which would mean that your body fat percentage would be decreasing while not seeing a change in the scales. As for me, on any given day I will go up as much as 5 lbs or so ... weight is not that static. It could be muscle mass or even water retention. Relax and have fun.
  • I love that the last two people hit you with semantics. Let's call it a mini-plateau to make everyone happy :) Whatever you call it, its frustrating and make you feel like all your hard work is useless.

If I were you (and until two weeks ago I WAS-- I hadn't lost any weight since early April and I was ready to cut my hair just to make the scale move), I would try switching up your workout routine; add a little more cardio, and try eating the same amount you're eating now, but spread it out throughout the day. I suggest bringing your lunch to work divided into three small serving, and then use your actual lunch break to go for a walk.

In the meantime, do something nice for yourself, to remind yourself that you're attractive, and to motivate you to work harder. Buy a new exercise outfit, or go get a mani/pedi.

Well I personally agree with you a plateau is any time over a week when you aren't loosing. I realize experts say more but I realize how frustrating it can get after so many days but I'd suggest just keep doing what you are doing plus I don't see your ticker so I'm not sure how close you are to your goal but when you get close you will naturally not loose as much as you use to but will slow down to probably 1/2 per week. Hope it goes the way you want and you loose what you want. Don't get discouraged!
