Hey all. I have read in the woman's world magazine that you can eat carbs but do not eat them after lunch.
If you really want to lose tons of weight or a little bit of weight that is the key. As Bob Harper says..
Eat lean meat and other good foods after lunch..
But one question about that..
How can I relate to this if I don't get up until 3pm-5pm every day and when I wake up I am normally eating breakfast? This is what I don't know lol..

The idea is probably nonsense, but setting that aside just work to the clock in a different time zone - If 3pm is your waking hour then somewhere to the West of you it is 8am so use their clock :-)
Or just add on 5 hours to your waking time and say that's "lunch" time.0 -
How come you think it is nonsense on what Bob Harper said of the biggest loser?? (don't understand the whole time )0

Yes, you have highlighted a problem with this type of approach - they are extremely general. I always find that plans or programmes or approaches need quite a bit of customisation to fit the patterns of my life, which are also not typical.
I'd very strongly recommend a book called 'Blood Sugar 101' by Jenny Ruhl. She advocates measuring how various carbohydrates impact you personally by taking your blood sugar readings after eating them. If a food really spikes your blood sugar at a certain time of day or in a certain portion size, then it might be best to stay away from it (because the drop in blood sugar following such a spike makes for ravenous hunger).
She calls this approach 'eating to your meter' and I think it has a lot of advantages, the greatest being that you get to know exactly what effect various foods have on your particular metabolism.0 -
it is nonsense. studies show that nutrient timing has no effect. Bob Harper got famous from a tv show. Getting famous from a tv show does not qualify Bob to give advice.0

I think it may be nonsense because our bodies work 24/7 and don't change their operating mode at lunchtime. Also most carbs are absorbed and dealt with in a couple of hours or so, so if the concern was about having elevated blood sugar levels when asleep (for example) then that would just suggest not eating carbs within two hours of going to bed.
Maybe it's just a way to get people to cut their carb intake by stealth - halving the time you can eat them and therefore forcing other food choices without having to come clean about reducing carbs as a goal.0 -
To be fair, any diabetic will tell you that the way they handle blood sugar differs throughout the day.
See this article: http://diabetes.diabetesjournals.org/content/50/6/1237.full
"In humans, glucose tolerance seems to vary during the day; more glucose is taken up early in the morning than in the afternoon and evening. Therefore, when plasma glucose concentrations are high before the onset of activity, humans seem to be more tolerant to glucose. The mechanism for this phenomenon is not well understood; therefore, we investigated, in rats, the hypothesis that the SCN is responsible for daily changes in glucose tolerance."0 -
Not a Bob hater, but can't say that I have ever read 1 of his books either... That being said I heard an interview on a radio station promoting his book and he advocated a couple of his so called Skinny rules.... One was limited/no carbs after lunch and Go to bed hungry??? After I heard that I turned the station... lol Maybe I am biased in my approach because I am a type 2 diabetic but I certainly am not afraid of carbs (I eat 300-340 grams a day) and there is no way in heck I could go from night til morning without eating something to keep my blood sugar's up while I sleep. There is nothing worse than having a low blood sugar attack at 3 in the morning and having to stumble to the kitchen trying to not blackout and get some juice or fast acting sugar in my system.. I guess this whole theory may not work for everyone but for me I definitely won't be joining that camp... My own personal opinion is there is no set rules about when you have to consume any of your calories, you just need to make sure you hit your macro's and your caloric intake for the day no matter when you eat them... I go to bed every night with a glass of 1% Chocolate milk (300 calories) 24 Almonds (130 calories) and a cup of Kellogg's Crave double chocolate cereal dry (160 calories) and do this every single night.. It curbs my chocolate cravings, gets me to my calorie goal for the day, and sustains my blood sugars till morning... I try to hit 80 to 90 grams of carbs at my 3 main meals and 30 grams at my 3 snacks everyday.... I don't have any other health problems that would cause me to have to cut back on carbs so I don't consider them the enemy.. They fuel my workouts and give me the energy I need and I have manage to lose a few pounds in the process.... Best of Luck....................0

Your question is the answer! How do you adjust this "don't eat carbs after lunch" to your time table? Time doesn't dictate how your body uses stuff. You can eat carbs after lunch, right before bed, and be fine. Why is it non-sense? Biggest Loser is a pretty horrible credit IMO, they aren't learning healthy realistic living styles at all, which is why they all go to crap after it.0 -
Absolutele nonsense.0

Shows like "The Biggest Loser" and "Dr. Oz" are great sources of entertainment but they are not great sources of information. Because they are being paid millions of dollars to sensationalize things, you shouldn't trust the information they present.
I fully realize that big fans of both shows get irritated every time I say something like this, but that doesn't change my stance on this. The overwhelming amount of either bad information or unsafe practices makes this pretty apparent.0 -
I only eat carbs at breakfast but that is purely because I eat low carb, and the easiest way to eat less carbs is to eat them less frequently. I could just as easily not eat carbs at any meal except dinner I just like to wake up and have some carbs. I don't think this type of thing applies to you if you are on nightshift, there is a nightshift thread which may help you?0
