Anyone do HIIT in the swimming pool?

If so would love to hear what you do. I usually swim at about the same pace each swim, with a mixture of crawl, breaststroke and backstroke. It takes me just under 35 mins to do a mile but I know I could push it more so thought HIIT might be fun.
Can anyone provide details of their swims, or recommend a website with some good suggestions for HIIT workouts in the water?
Also, does anyone wear a HRM in the pool? I keep looking to get one. How does HIIT in the pool compare to just swimming at the same pace in terms of calories burnt?
Thanks in advance

i go full speed 100% effort until im tired, then i rest until im recovered... the time is irrelevant because you will continuously get in better shape... i like doing active recovery tho for example sometimes i swim full speed to one side of the pool then swim slowly back and once i get back i go full speed again.0 -
great thank you, will give it a go. kind of been doing the same by doing 2 laps of each stroke in rotation, I can go quicker at the crawl than at breststroke. gunna give it a go doing as you did0

well I tried this last night and could deffo feel a difference to my heart rate, and my hammies are sore today from doing backstroke as fast as I could! Will keep it up :-)0

Glad it worked! As well as one fast, one slow active recovery, I also do two lengths full-pelt, then 30 or 45 second break (depending on how many sets I'm planning on doing). Tend to only do this if the lane is pretty quiet, though, or the endurance swimmers get a bit upset haha. Nothing worse than someone tapping your feet to overtake, then seeing them taking a break when you get back to the other side of the pool!
For swims over a mile, I do three normal pace, one fast. It has a similar effect.0 -
I've not done HIIT but I do wear my polar FT4 in the pool and it works well. Just dont press any buttons when its in the water.0
