12 inch pancake?

Okay, so I am having a lot of trouble figuring out the calories in a plain 12 inch pancake. Yes I know that is a huge pancake. The restaurant we are going to later on today is known for their giant pancakes. I'm assuming (this is plain, not toppings) that it can probably go all the way up to 500 calories. But maybe I'm completely wrong here. Any takers?

Sounds like a good name for a band.0

Hmmm ....... is that one of those Dutch pancakes ...... OMG, I love them ....... livestrong.com says a regular 4-inch pancake has 86 calories ....... fat is 36, carbs 44, protein 6 ...... do the math for a 12-inch pancake ..... and that's with NO toppings ...... MFP probably has different stats, but the numbers still look pretty high ...... enjoy & then go exercise !

If I do the math (using some other numbers I've also seen and sort of averaging, sort of taking some of the higher numbers) it would be around 350 ish. Too me that seems too low, but what do I know, lol. Exercise will be happening anyway. I've got a 3 mile run and 30 day shred calling my name.
And Sidesteal, I agree0 -
I believe the "standard" pancake is 4" or 12" is going to be 9x the volume and 9x the standard calorie at least to first approximation. Saw 55 cal for pancake, so this is likely about 500 cal without extras.0
-
Wait, why would it be 9x the volume? Wouldn't it be 3x? I know math is not my strongest subject, but still....eating one 12 inch pancake has not filled me up the same as eating a stack of 9 pancakes.....not even sure I could eat a stack of 9 4" pancakes....0

and there is no way that a standard pancake is only 55 cals. That much I know from making my own. Unless you are talking about the half dollar cakes (or whatever they are called).0

GO eat the pancake.
Restart tracking tomorrow. One pancake is not worth this much stress in your life.0 -
does the restaurant have a menu you can look up and see nutritional value?
or maybe disregard the pancake and go for something else?0 -
i'd figure it to be 3-4x a normal pancake. but honestly, you could probably ask the restaurant. they have to have nutritional fax right? also, you could use sugar free syrup. also, you can buy a 12in and just eat half. either way, i think you should enjoy and get back at it at the next meal. and work it out.0

If you laid out 3 4" pancakes side by side you would have 12 x 4 inches.
You have to figure in the diameter and everything with pi.
9 x 4" sounds closer to what you consume.0 -
On a side note here.
I can make 3 6 inch pancakes for under 200 calories too.
You would really need to know what is going into the pancakes.
The thickness of them makes a huge difference as well.0 -
[begin boring math explanation]
The reason a 12-inch pancake would be 9x the size of a 4-inch pancake and not 3x the size is because the area grows by the square of the radius.
Area of a circle = π * (diameter/2)²
So a 4-inch pancake has an area of
π * (4/2)² = π * (2*2) = 4π square inches
And a 12-inch pancake has an area of
π * (12/2)² = π * (6*6) = 36π square inches
The other thing to consider - a pancake that size would probably be thicker, so the number of calories might be even MORE than 9x.
[end boring math explanation]
Having said that, a 12-inch pancake sounds AWESOME.0 -
Stop stressing over it and just eat it!0

Denny's 3 - 4 inch pancakes are a total of 200 cals0

I'd want to know too. The range of calories can be quite large, so it's good to figure out before you go to the restaurant so you don't get suckered into something even higher in calories. You're doing to right thing by trying to figure it out now.
Restaurants don't have to provide nutritional information. I've asked before, and if it's just a mom-and-pop, they have no idea.0 -
How about using the nutrition facts for a waffle. They generally have the same ingredients as pancake batter and are usually around 12" -- the IHOP website says a plain Belgian waffle (they are thicher, right?) is 380 calories.0

Can't say I've ever seen a 12" waffle.
Those of a certain age may remember vinyl LPs. Those were 12" in diameter.0 -
Area goes up by the square of the diameter, hence 3x3 is where the 9x comes assuming the thickness is the same. And people wonder why math is useful0
