Hey guys,

So I'm thinking about pregnancy and wondering what would happen to calorie intake if I were to try. I want to still lose the excess weight I have and I dont know what I'd do...

Any advice?

Thanks

Well, my doc said during pregnancy you shouldn't be trying to lose weight. I was overweight when I got pg and they suggested that I only gain 15-20lbs vice 35lbs.

From what I've read and from my doctor's advice from my first pregnancy, staying in shape will benefit you when it comes time for labor and delivery. Obese women have higher chance of delivering via c-section, which is associated with many risks.

My sister in law and I both had normal, low risk pregnancies and we were both advised to keep our weight gain under control. At one point, my SILs doc recommended Weight Watchers (or similar) in order to keep track of what she was eating.

I would make sure to check out a few doctors or midwives before choosing your provider. If you live in the US, make sure to find a doctor or midwife that does not treat pregnancy as a disability.

Your ticker says you are trying to lose 16 pounds. Is that your total weight loss goal? If it is, then I would encourage you to just continue healthy eating and exercise if you do get pregnant.

Of course, more important than the advice you will read in this thread is discussing your desire to conceive with your OB/GYN and talk about what a healthy weight gain would look like for you. I was about 30 pounds overweight with my last pregnancy (#4) and gained 40 pounds. My doc never once freaked out about my weight b/c all of my labs came back perfect. I've lost all 40 pounds of the pregnancy weight and 6 more on top of that.

Just a tip - breastfeeding exclusively with a newborn will help you drop weight like crazy (at least it did for me). ;)

CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR FIRST. But, in general at maintenance for the first trimester. 300 over for the 2nd and 3rd.

Hi I am a student midwife in the UK and we advise to eat a normal healthy diet which will not lead to excess weight gain (the whole eating for two thing that a lot of people do here in the Uk!!)
On a normal maintaining diet, you actually only need to eat an extra apple a day for the extra calories needed to sustain a normal low risk pregnancy :)

I have just been involved in a trial at work I am a midwife where pregnant women with a BMI over 30 were recruited to follow the slimming world diet throughour pregnancy. The idea was that they maintained there weight or gained very little and we worked on there self esteem and also gave some parentcraft/ midwifery input as well. Most of the women had very low self esteem/depression when they joined the study. By the end of it the ones that stuck with the plan had lost about 14-20lbs (pn weigh in)but the most positive benefit was there self confidence and general happiness. Some of them came of antidepressants for the first time in years. the womens diets were carefully monitored to make sure they included all food groups and ate enough for themselves and there babies to grow. The pregnancies wewre also closely monitored and any problems were weighed up to see if it was the study that had caused it or not. It is an ongoing UK wide trial and the results won,t be available for another year. They were also encouraged to walk as part of the plan. Dieting is not to be encouraged and if they consistently lost weight whilst still pregnant we looked very closely at their dietary intake. Some of them did consistently lose weight as there diets considerably improved than before the study commenced. All of the babies were a normal birth weight and most had very positive birth stories. Hope this helps.

When pregnant with my 1st, I lost 1 lb total and with my 2nd i gained 8 lbs total. I didnt diet to lose weight, i never would do that. My babies healths came first. But i did cut out all junk food and replaced it with fruits and veggies. I replaced all soda with water. This was healthier for the baby & as a bonus helped me not gain any weight. (I was obese though and eating lots of junk before getting pregnant.)

I think your asking if you should continue to lose weight WHILE trying to get pregnant? If so, I have known friends to GOT pregnant while LOSING weight...but not purposely..this is something you may wanna ask your doctor...

Hey guys Ive only just seen all this thank you So much for your support. I'll
Be totally straight I've just found out I'm pregnant only 5 weeks and im massively confused. I'm only a bit overweight but when I asked my midwife what I should do with my diet she just told me to carry on as I was (she didn't ask me what I was doing). Since them I've lost it (as in the control ober food) as ive been baffled by what I should do. I'd like to know calories that i should intake so I can control What im eating otherwise I'll be eating for 5 let alone 2.

Obviously I'm over the moon I just need to know how to control it when I have no will power!

We are trying to get pregnant and I was told by my fertility specialist that with pregnancy you are supposed to add 300 healthy calories/day during pregnancy.. for my size and weight I am supposed to gain 15 to 20 pound...If you are trying I would suggest you to ask your doctor what healthy amount of calorie intake you need to stay healthy..

stop trying to loose weight. There is information on how much you should be gaining. but so many factors here. You need to talk to your DR. no joke. they will let you know what your weight gain should be. Also post preggy, what your milk production means.

Congratulations! Talk to your OB! You should probably need to eat TDEE+300 (it is not eating for 2 it is eating for +300 calories).

If you breast feed, you will lose everything you gain and then some as long as your diet stays decent (+500 calories/day for exclusive breast feeding and crazy hormonal fat loss advantages)
