Substitutes for these "non-clean" foods?

I was wondering if there are good substitutes (or different brands that are clean) for the following canned/seemingly processed foods:
~cream of mushroom soup
~cream of chicken soup
~refried beans
~tortillas that don't have PHSO
~ice cream or frozen yogurt
Also, anyone know how to make your own granola? Where does one find steel cut oats?
Thanks!

I make my own "cream" soups. I haven't used the canned stuff in years.
I use
3 tbsp. butter (can cut down)
3 tbsp. flour
1 c. milk
Make a roux with the butter & flour and slowly whisk in milk. This is a basic recipe that I find works for any casserole.
For cream of chicken you can use 1/2 c. milk + 1/2 c. chicken broth/stock. If you want a mushroom-y flavor you can add some chopped mushrooms, or for cream of celery, you can add celery. I usually just use the 1/2 chicken broth, 1/2 milk variety, I find it works for any recipe.
Steel cut oats are in the cereal aisle. At my Kroger, they are on the top shelf with things like Malt-o-meal. The Quaker brand comes in a small blue container.0 -

refried beans are easy to make! just buy some pinto beans, let them soak in water for about half a day (changing out the water and tossing any floater beans), then once they have soaked all the water up and are plumped up, put them in a big bowl and take a fork to them. drizzle on some EVOO and enjoy.
you can put in some salt, pepper, and minced onions if you want too0 -
You can also make Tortillas at home. I got a decent recipe from a bread cook book one time- just flour, water and salt, I believe- but you can always try the internet.0

Steel Cut Oats can be found at Trader Joes, in the Irish section of many grocery stores, or from a co op.
Making your own granola is very easy, and tasty and there are a million ways to do it, so I would look around for a good starter recipe and tweak it to your liking.
Refried beans are so easy, I cook mine in the crockpot all day and then cook them and freeze them in smaller batches.
There are great "old fashioned" ways to make ice cream, again check the net.
Hillbillyhousewife.com is a great source for from scratch recipes, which can or cannot be made clean, depending on your choice of ingredients.
Good luck!0 -
Thanks, everyone!
I have used hillbillyhousewife.com several times before, so I should look at it again. Also, I just remembered that I have an ice cream maker. Now's a good time to break it out.0 -

You don't cook your beans?
Refried beans are easy to make, but, you could also buy Rosarita vegetarian beans which are really good. I have a can of Whole foods refried beans in the cabinet but haven't tried 'em yet.0 -
My problem is that we don't have a Whole Foods nor a Trader Joe's near us. :grumble:0

Interesting thread. I'd love to hear some more recipes for some common processed foods if anyone has them.

Yes. I have an old Salad Shooter (I don't think they make them anymore, but I'm sure there's something else out there you can use). I use the slicer part and slice my potatoes onto the baking sheet. I use a little olive oil on the pan and some sea salt. I bake them in the oven, I believe, on 400. I'm not sure how long because I've never timed them. The important thing is to make sure they're spread out on the baking sheet and not piled thick. It has taken several tries. You can also use cooking spray instead of the olive oil.0 -
Homemade cream of mushroom soup is soooo much better than the canned soup! It's so good that crackers even ruin the soup.0
