Juice Cleansing?

Fairly long story I'll try to make concise (by the by, I'm not good at being concise, so don't expect this to be short at all), I found a site all about teaching and walking you through yoga practices and meditation (I'm not good at yoga, but damn do I love meditating -- so peaceful), and this particular site has a "21-day challenge". It led me to another site that I also won't name, since I'm unsure whether MFP allows for advertising of other sites (but if you're interested, you may message me about it).

Long story still goin' on, this site is way cool -- you create a profile and start logging goals for yourself, and just like you check in to MFP to log your foods, on this other site, you log how you've done on your goals (i.e. if you have a goal to meditate fifteen minutes a day, you go in and log how long you meditated, also similar to MFP, or if you have a goal to plant a hundred trees in a year, you can log that daily as well, so it's pretty cool)!

Anyway, this leads me to ask about juice cleansing. Here's the description on the "Juice Cleansing: 3 days in 30" goal:

"Your mission: Three days of juice cleansing over the course of a month. Give your body a break from hard to digest cooked meals, with loads of sugar, salt, and fat! For three days, consume only water, fruits and vegetables blended into tasty raw juices. "

What do you guys think about this? Does it sound beneficial, or does it sound like it will rob your body for a day? Have any of you ever tried detoxing/cleansing by this method before, and how did it feel for you?

I actually finished my first juice fast about a month ago. Mine was supposed to last 10 days but I only got through 8. I did like it alot. I didn't loose much weight, but I did consume more fresh fruits and veg in 1 week than I probably did in the entire previous year or more. My husband did the cleanse with me. That was very helpful. Our goal was mostly just to reset. The break from hydroginated this and high fructose that was wonderful. I didn't feel hungry at all - that is unless I couldn't get a juice quick enough - I did then think that i might die. BUT... I'm glad I did it and would do it again.
My motivation came from the movie "Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead". (Available on Netflix) Watching 2 men go from life as obese men with major medical problems to healthy and thin was very inspiring.
My only major advice. Take it easy on the Kale... that stuff nearly made me puke.:noway:

Oh, that's awesome! Yeah, it's nice to shed some weight, but ultimately the best reward is just feeling better about yourself, right? =).

Yes, I've seen that that's available on Netflix, and I love watching documentaries, and especially ones that concern people and their health, but I can never get the boyfriend to watch it with me, so I've never seen it... but since you bring it up, I think I'll just "borrow" his Netflix at home one day and watch it then. xD.

And thank you for the lengthy response! I love getting not just a perspective, but a lot of a single perspective. Awesome.

Glad to help... I did forget to mention that my cousin did the cleanse as well... he had quite a bit of weight to loose, and this was hugely successful for him. He looks and feels great now.

I think juice cleansing is wonderful and 3 days is a very safe and healthy length to go for on your own! I've done longer juice cleanses (my longest being 14 days) but I found that once I extended them past 3 days I had a difficult time easing out. With 3 days, I feel invigorated without deprived, and I can go back to eating with a new sense of balance without wanting to eat everything in sight! Does that help?

You've inspired me to add a 3 day juice cleanse to my monthly ritual! That sounds like a fantastic idea to detox every month.

Oh, awesome! Yeah, for this goal, it doesn't even have to be three days at a time, just three days in a thirty day period, so it could even be once a week, if three days at a time seems like too much. Ahh, yeah, it makes sense after a long time, you'd feel a bit starved. I'm considering starting for just one day to get myself used to it, but the idea of it actually gets me pretty excited! I usually keep a decent supply of fruits and veggies at home, but I may invest in more so I can eat only that for a day when I get my next check. <3.

And I'm glad to have inspired you! =D. It sounds like a mostly effortless goal with a lot of benefit.

Same here. I've never done it, but if no one has many scary objections to it, I think I'll try it. Besides, it can't hurt to do it for one day at a time, right? x3.

Alas, I've no juice recipes. Knowing me though, I'll happily just throw anything and everything into a blender (but a juicer would be better, if I had one).

Yes I'm with you. I'll probably do it for a day to start off with. I'm in a wedding this Friday. So I may do this tomorrow and Thursday to kind of as I call it "de-bloat" myself! LOL I'm sure that will help! And yes, I don't have a juicer either but my blender will get a lot of use! LOL I don't have the money to go buy one either! So do you just use any veggie or fruit and water? Can you use frozen or canned veggie?

we juice and pretty much use cucumber, apple or pear, kale, carrots, chard and any other veggie...it can look kind of gross at times but usually tastes good...also, check craigslist or goodwill for used juicers. Good luck

    Just found this page.

Oh, that sounds perfect! It also sounds like a good way to make sure you're getting enough fluids (which always works to de-bloat me). I wouldn't personally add water to fruits and veggies for juicing, but maybe some recipes call for that? I don't know, but thanks for sharing the link! I'll have to check it out before I do my shopping.

See, some of that doesn't sound good, but it does sound nutritious. <3. I'll have to try it. AND YES, THAT SOUNDS LIKE A PERFECT IDEA FOR FINDING CHEAP JUICERS! ALSO CAPS LOCK! =D.

Groupon had a cheap juicer with decent reviews last week (US). We picked it up, as my fiancé is not supposed to eat fruit skins due to digestion issues.

I did a five day veggie/fruit juice cleanse in college. I used lots of leafy greens, and various things. I recall ginger making it's way into most of my juices. It was a little weird to not chew for five days, but once I got over that, it was good. The bad part was: I was **way** too active during that time period. If you're going to do a strict juice fast, to the best of my knowledge, it's recommended that you take it fairly easy. I was walking to/from/around campus (it was about a 1.5 mile walk, each way) in pretty high heat. I also swam, and went to two shows that week. By the end of the fifth day, I was pretty loopy.

I think it's worth trying, but listen to your body and be sure you're resting enough.

Also: watch out for beets. I just had a glass of pure, fresh beet juice and it made me vomit within 10-15 minutes or so.

A few tips for first timers... Stick close to a toilet for the first 3 days. Do not take anti diahreal drug if you get it - this is detoxing. Wash your fruits and veggies carefully. Don't use canned. They are full of sugar and it looses nutrients. Also, juice fresh daily and avoid bottled juices (even 100%) If you must buy juice to save time, try bolthouse, or another juice that as only a week or 2 shelf life. Remember Grape juice covers the taste of anything. Use the largest variety of fruits and veggies possible.

    A recipe :
    1 Carrot
    1/2 cucumber
    2 apples
    10 large strawberries
    1 Banana

Juice cleansing is awesome. Do it.

Try to get your greens from a local source. The fresher, the better. Kale tastes SO MUCH better in my juicer when it comes from my yard, as opposed to the store.

Get your produce all organic if possible. Pesticides taste like crap.

    Get a good juicer.
