Advice about hip pain and running

I began running earlier this spring. After completing C25K, I have run my first (and second) 5k races. I have not done much running since my 2nd race (May 19). The last time I ran was this past Friday on the treadmill at the gym. After i finished, my left hip was really hurting. I had felt this before, but not quite this bad. After some internet research, it sounded a lot like IT band syndrome...a tightness down the side of my hip. I have not done any running since that day, but did walk on Saturday. Just wanted to get some advice about how to handle cardio exercise... do I stop running until the pain is completely gone and maybe just do the elliptical or arc trainer? I really don't want to abandon running altogether, but I also don't want to hurt myself!!

have you got a foam roller? If not, might be worth trying it, they're v. good for self-massage if it is ITB
(they sounds quite gentle dont they? 'foam roller', like rolling about in foam? now imagine the *opposite* of that... )0
