What is Weight Training?

Just as the topic says, I have no idea what weight training really is.
I always just assumed it was like some underground bare hand boxing club. Where men, shirtless for some reason, glare at each other while sitting on little once-white stools and lifting large dumbells(?). Their arms muscles bulging with veins that appear to burst out of their skin. It's a place where the sun doesn't shine. Tt is forbidden to peer through the dusty cracked windows that have rags to instead of curtains. Only darkness and testrone fill the gym.
Ok, maybe a bit dramatic there but still. I'd like to know what kind of weight training there is to help me have an idea.

Personally, I perv on the women instead. But I try not to let them see me gawking at them on the Elliptical.

Loosing excess weight is one part of the fitness equation. The other part is strength and with this comes tone. Traditionally people walked or cycled more, swept rather than vacuumed, hand washed clothes, spent full days in thefield or with animals, kneaded dough and generally kept more physically active in their simple day to day survival. The modern era has meant that we are far more sedentary than nature designed our bodies to be. Weight training in the modern world is almost a necessity to counter our more physically relaxed/ sedetary lifestyle for our bodies and hormones to maintain themselves at healthy levels.
It is very difficult to bulk on weight training. I often see slim model types ( to my utter amazement!) do heavy weights (mainly machines) at the gym, to strengthen, tone and shape legs, arms, butts and abs. I also see them do some amazing stretches. I have just started weights and after a month already my arms, butt and legs are looking much better. You do not want to be skinny fat.
Also doing weights and familiarising yourself with your inner physical being so adds to your total physical awareness that you end up respecting yourself more, the fine machine that is you, so food consciousness turns eventually to unconscious behaviour and part of the overall health sensibility that you bear.
Visit a good gym that has a good physical atmosphere and lots of equipment for you to explore and have fun on, and not a male dominated gym. Let other girls be your inspiration in seeing what they do for themselves and learn from them.0
